Kebnekaise is the highest mountain in Sweden, thus being is the natural high point in the northern mountain region of Sweden, ranging from Abisko to Sarek.
The height 2114m is derived from the detailed Kebnekaise map.
Although Kebnekaise kan be reached on several trails around the region, the normal approach is to drive from Kiruna to Nikkaluokta, and hike the 19Km to Kebnekaise fjellstation.

Kebnekaise (6,973'), Sweden's highest peak, is located ninety miles north of the Arctic Circle in the massive chain of mountains, running southwest to northeast, which forms the backbone of Scandinavia.
Forty miles to the east of Kebnekaise lies Xiruna, a city noteworthy for its huge open pit iron ore mines.
Thanks to my topo map, I knew that, though Kebnekaise's summit ridge has several false peaks, the true high point was on the near, southern end.

The triangular mountain region of Kebnekaise is bounded by three valleys: Tjäktavagge on the west, Ladtjovagge on the south and Vistasvagge on the east.

Going up Kebnekaise herself on the other side was technically easier, but I was starting to suffer from my exertions, and when we got to the stuga I had an uneasy feeling that things were not right, but I couldn't think clearly enough to work out what.

The plan for this year was for 4 days of top tours from Kebnekaise fjaellstation, before joining friends for another winter camping trip in Norway, but after 2 days my hands swelled up horribly, and I aborted the rest of the trip to let my tendons recover properly.
If you want to know more about Kebnekaise, and reaching the south peak, see the report from my '97 attempt.
It is 500m lower than the south peak of Kebnekaise, but still a good climb of 900m from the station.

The students I met in the Tjäktja Pass had found 4-5 mm long larvae in the water they had taken from the fresh water tap at Kebnekaise Mountain Station.
There is not many hikers out on the trail at this time of the year.
I also saw a pitched tent on the hill east of the bridge 1.5 km E the Mountain Station.

The area around Kebnekaise is very scenic and suitable for trekking.
It is also possible to get to Kebnekaise by starting at Abisko and walk for a week or 2 on Kungsleden before arriving to Kebnekaise.

T.E.O. Stage two of TEO will take the teams from Abisko, past Kebnekaise all the way to a place, not far from Kiruna, called Kaalasjärvi.
Covering a vast distance it is expected to take approximately 43 hrs for the teams to reach the finish line.
This is where the ascent up towards Kebnekaise South Peak starts, and all teams will need all the rest they can get before they start the climb.

I am finally in Sweden, Uppsala, and I still plan to go up north this weekend.
if you are really good by foot youn can do kebnekaise from nikkoluokta in one day up, but on the way back you might have to get a shelter or tent.
