Gamelan gong kebyar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gamelan gong kebyar is a modern style or genre of Balinese gamelan music.
Kebyar means "the process of flowering", and refers to the explosive changes in tempo and dynamics characteristic of the style.
Gong kebyar music is based on a five-tone scale called pelog selisir (tones 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the 7-tone pelog scale), and is characterized by brilliant sounds, syncopations, sudden and gradual changes in sound colour, dynamics, tempo and articulation, and complex, complementary interlocking melodic and rhythmic patterns called kotekan.

Kebyar is a populist form born, ironically enough, out of the Dutch supplanting of the Balinese court.
Accounts as to the actual creation of kebyar are sketchy, but the most oft repeated is the story of two gamelan groups engaging in a competition to the pleasure and amazement of thousand of gathered villagers.
Kebyar has continued to increase in popularity in the brief 90 years since its inception and with regular public competitions the genre has spurred groups into increasingly faster tempos and stylistic flourishes as well as challenging young composers to be constantly vigilant and innovative in creating new works.

Its publication in the year 2000 is apt considering that Kebyar evolved around 1915 from its early roots in northern Bali, and over the course of the twentieth century it became the island's pre-eminent musical genre.
Yet, despite the fact that the Kebyar gamelan (percussion orchestra) and the Kebyar style of composition have attained such importance, they are underrepresented in a literature that has tended to focus more on older musical genres.
Kebyar's frequent stylistic and melodic quotations from older gamelan genres also provide a great deal of musical interest, particularly to informed Balinese audiences.
