Keck telescopes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mauna Kea Observatory, an institute of the University of Hawai'i, is considered one of the most important land-based observatories in the world for its isolated, unobstructed views of space without interference from man-made light sources.
The W.M. Keck telescopes are the two largest optical/near-infrared telescopes of the Mauna Kea Observatory on Mauna Kea in Hawai'i.
The Keck telescopes have, essentially, 10 m mirrors; however, rather than having one mirror each telescope has 36 smaller hexagonal mirrors working together.

In addition, Keck I and II can work together, via interferometry ; this gives them the effective power of an 85m mirror.

 Keck Pictures of Uranus
Observations of Uranus conducted at the W. Keck Observatory in Hawaii are surprising astronomers with the level of detail they can see from the ground.
Later observations conducted by the team at University of Wisconsin-Madison, also with the Keck II AO system, were formed into a composite image in which the highest clouds appear white, the middle level clouds appear bright green, and the lower clouds appear darker blue (Figure 2).

Keck Observatory is operated by the California Association for Research in Astronomy (CARA), a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation whose board of directors includes representatives from the California Institute of Technology, the University of California, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

The Telescope System Instrumentation Program (TSIP): Computation of the Cost of a Night of Keck Telescope Observing
The cost of one night of observing with one of the Keck 10-meter telescopes is derived from two numbers; total annual cost of the Keck facility divided by the number of nights the telescopes are used for observations by the Keck Observatory partners.
The earliest that the Keck Observatory can provide observing nights to the TSIP is in calendar year 2003, so the computation of cost per night is computed for FY03 (the Keck fiscal year matches the federal fiscal year).
The total development cost for the Keck telescopes was $183.1 million, which is a combination of two phases: Phase I ($101.4 million) and Phase II ($81.7 million).

Remote operations of Keck I from the Keck headquarters in Waimea began before the Keck II telescope opened for observations.
When the Keck Telescopes began to be used remotely from the Keck HQ in Waimea, HI, the motivations were twofold: First, to increase service for the observers by providing a direct link between HQ observatory staff and the observers at the telescope.
Observatory policy currently requires at least one observer to be on-site at Keck HQ, to ensure that telescope time is not lost in case of remote system failure.

Universe Today - Keck Uses Adaptive Optics for the First Time
A major milestone in astronomical history took place recently at the W.M. Keck Observatory when scientists, for the first time, used a laser to create an artificial guide star on the Keck II 10-meter telescope to correct the blurring of a star with adaptive optics (AO).
Team members responsible for the Keck LGS AO system are Antonin Bouchez, Jason Chin, Adam Contos, Scott Hartman, Erik Johansson, Robert Lafon, David Le Mignant, Chris Neyman, Paul Stomski, Doug Summers, Marcos van Dam, and Peter Wizinowich, all from the W.M.  06.03.2002 - Keck Telescope's adaptive optics let astronomers study volcanic activity on Io from armchair on Earth
Berkeley - New adaptive optics on Hawaii's Keck Telescope have produced the sharpest infrared images yet of the entire surface of Io, one of Jupiter's moons, allowing astronomers to study the moon and its volcanoes regularly from Earth rather than rely on space-based observations from the Galileo satellite orbiting the planet.
The images were then converted by a Keck team to an animation and a Java applet, which gives interactive control with simultaneous comparisons to close-up pictures taken at visible wavelengths by the Galileo orbiter.
The project to image the surface of Io and demonstrate the imaging performance of the Keck adaptive optics with NIRC2 is being led jointly by Marchis and David Le Mignant, PhD, of the observatory.

With the atmospheric blurring removed by the Keck adaptive optics system, and the large diameter of a 10-meter mirror, the Keck II telescope is now more powerful than even the largest space-based telescope for looking at the cosmos in the near infrared.
"Keck's achievement in bringing this new technology to fruition marks nothing less than a renaissance in ground-based infrared astronomy, equivalent to the day Galileo first turned his telescope to look at the night sky," said Dr. Matt Mountain, director of the Gemini Observatory, which operates twin 8-meter telescopes.
