The Virginia Peninsula is a peninsula in southeast Virginia, bounded by the York River, James River, Hampton Roads, and Chesapeake Bay.
Virginia's first capital was in Williamsburg; much of the historic district of that city has been restored.
Generally surrounded by water, the Virginia Peninsula The region is linked to other areas across the surrounding water barriers of the James and York Rivers, and the harbor of Hampton Roads by 2 bridge-tunnels, 2 large drawbridges, and a state-operated ferry system.

 Kecoughtan, Virginia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kecoughtan in Virginia was originally named Kikotan (also spelled Kecoughtan and Kikowtan), presumably a word for the native americans living there when the English colonists arrived in the Hampton Roads area in 1607.
While Kecoughtan was never an incorporated town, the area was continuously occupied after 1610, it became part of Elizabeth River Shire in 1634, and Elizabeth City County in 1637.
Through the Kecoughtan settlement, Hampton is the home of the oldest continually occupied English settlement in North America.

With the arrival of Delaware, Kecoughtan (renamed Elizabeth City in 1619) was established as a permanent settlement.
Virginia already enjoyed a high degree of religious freedom due, perhaps, to the fact that a number of company officers were strongly under the influence of the puritan element within the Church of England.
Virginia could not yet support these projects profitably, and interest was lacking on the part of the planters who found in tobacco a source of wealth superior to anything else that had been tried.

In 1619, Kecoughtan's first two representatives in the House of Burgesses were Captain William Tucker and William Capps.
Tucker was the military commander of Kecoughtan and Capps an early landowner on the west side of the Hampton River.
During the period between 1620 and the founding of the town of Hampton in the 1690s, the name "Kecoughtan" seems to have referred to the scatter of waterfront plantations and trading establishments along the Hampton River.

Strachey informs us that before the aboriginal settlement at Kecoughtan was broken up, the population of that place was close upon one thousand, their wigwams numbering three hundred, but there is nothing to show that all of these dwellings were built in the immediate neighborhood of each other.
So bountiful had nature been to the Virginia of the aborigines, that they were only compelled to provide by manual labor a subsistence for one-fourth of the year; during the remainder they adapted themselves to the seasons, and lived on what the country spontaneously afforded.
At Kecoughtan and Rappahannock, places visited by the voyagers on their way up the Powhatan, they were entertained with feasts that included a great variety of fruits, vegetables, fish, fowls, and wild beasts.

Until 1624, the colony of Virginia was a business managed by the equivalent of a plant manager with a local oversight board.
Shiploads of settlers were sent to Virginia to create largely self-sufficient "hundreds." The name reflected the anticipated number of new settlers required to establish a permanent community.
Virginia was ruled as a royal colony of the king (as opposed to a proprietary colony, where authority was granted to an individual such as William Penn or Lord Calvert) until the American Revolution.

Kecoughtan Lodge (pronounced "KICK-oh-tan") was originally chartered in 1951 under Peninsula Council, which was headquartered in Newport News, Virginia.
The Kecoughtan Indians were members of the Powhatan Confederacy which dominated southeast Virginia in the early 1800's.
Kecoughtan Lodge's chapters (Kiskiack, Mattaponi, Pamunkey, and Piankatank) as well as the Council Camp (Chickahominy) were named for other Indian tribes which were also members of the Powhatan Confederacy and indigenous to the local region.

The settlement in Virginia had not been profitable and the company was facing a threatened dissolution by the king.
The Virginia Company was dissolved in 1625 and another new leadership group was established with Virginia as a royal colony.
In 1639 it was proposed to the King to give all of the Northern Neck and the Virginia portion of the Eastern Shore to William Claiborne and Maurice Thompson to establish a separate colony just as had been done with Lord Baltimore and Maryland.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Winona Walker was born in South Boston, Virginia, on August 9, 1908, the oldest of seven children.
After graduating from State Teachers College in Harrisonburg, Virginia, she taught English and history for three years.
