  Keeler - California Ghost Town
Keeler was a terminal for the steamer ships that traversed Owens Lake from Keeler to Cartago.
Keeler took all the ore from the smelter at nearby Swansea, and shipped it via either steamboat or the Carson and Colorado railroad, which ended at Keeler.
Keeler was a much higher slass town than the others, and many miners' families lived in Keeler.

It was given to Leonard Harrelson, who became Keeler’s confidant and director of the Keeler Polygraph Institute until Keeler’s death in 1949 as a memento of their friendship.

California Central Valley grasslands - Encyclopedia of Earth
The valley runs NW to SE for 430 miles in central California, paralleling the Sierra Nevada Range to the east and the coastal ranges to the west (averaging 75 miles apart), and stopping abruptly at the Tehachapi Range in the south.
California’s Great Central Valley once supported a diverse array of perennial bunchgrass ecosystems including prairies, oak-grass savannas, desert grasslands, as well as a mosaic of riparian woodlands, freshwater marshes, and vernal pools.
The California Hibiscus (Hibiscus californicus) and the Valley Elderberry Longhorn Beetle (Desmocerus californicus dimorphus) are restricted to limited areas of remaining woodlands.

I'm going to stomp it out of you,' pushed Teresa Keeler against the car, shoved his knee into her abdomen, and struck her in the face with several blows." The assault fractured the skull of Baby Girl Vogt, causing her to be delivered stillborn.
But to the shock and horror of almost everyone, the Court ruled that Keeler would only be guilty of murder if a fetus was "a human being within the meaning of the statute" - - which the Court said was not the case.
For many years, the California courts misinterpreted the statute, often requiring that the child be "viable" - - capable of surviving outside the womb on his or her own - - before this charge would apply.

Keeler, out from Wisconsin with a year or so of college behind him and a job at the California Academy of Sciences, was barely twenty, but he affected a long fl cape and a gold-headed cane.
Keeler became Maybeck’s first client, and the little studio house on Highland Place was like the first enunciation of a prophetic religion.
And in 1898 Maybeck and Keeler and their neighbors formed the Hillside Club, whose goal was nothing less than to turn the entire community into a woodland garden—a gentle, parklike encampment of “simple homes” and winding lanes, pedestrian walks and flowering stairways.

FindLaw's Writ - Colb: Is Killing an Undiscovered First-Trimester Fetus Murder in California?
The Justices' questions and comments to counsel during oral argument suggest that they are inclined to rule that a defendant can be guilty of murder for killing the fetus of a woman who neither the defendant, nor the woman herself, knew was pregnant.
On a special application to arrest the proceedings, Keeler argued that the word "human being" in the homicide statute should not be understood to include a fetus that had not yet been born at its time of death.
The statutory answer is that California law does not draw a distinction either between a "human being" and a "fetus," or between an early fetus and a late fetus, when the killer's actions fall outside of the limited exception for consensual abortion.

The Central Valley ecoregion was originally based on Omernik’s Central California Valley ecoregion (7), although boundaries in some areas have been revised by Bob Holland, an expert on vernal pools and valley vegetation.

Robert Keeler, whom she had divorced the previous fall, blocked the path of her car on a narrow mountain road near Stockton, Calif., and asked her if she was expecting a child by her new lover.
In Robert Keeler's case, prosecutors tried to charge him with the murder of "Baby Girl Vogt" — the child's father was a  man named Ernest Vogt — along with the beating of his ex-wife.
Under California law, someone accused of multiple murders is eligible for the death penalty although the final decision about whether to seek capital charges rests with prosecutors.

In response to the ruling in Keeler, the California legislature amended its murder statute to add "fetus" to the class of victims whose malicious killing would qualify as murder, coupled with an exception for consensual abortions.
First, in the current case, when defendant Harold Taylor shot his ex-girlfriend Patty Fansler to death in 1999, neither the victim nor Taylor knew that Fansler was pregnant.

The C&C was built in part to connect the mines on the east side of the Owens Valley with the legendary Virginia & Truckee Railroad.
However, from 1912 until the end of narrow gauge operations in 1960, the narrow gauge was operated as part of the Southern Pacific as the Keeler Branch; SP lettering on cars and locomotives reflected this.
