Built to Spill: Keep it Like a Secret: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
As avid readers of music publications will note as the reviews trickle in, Keep It Like a Secret will be heralded for retreating back to the pop songs of Love while keeping a foot inside Perfect's scrimmage line of dexterity and guitar heroism.
Seriously, Keep It Like a Secret has already been spun at Club Jason five times within the past 24 hours.
Speaking of classic rock, "You Were Right" is a tongue- in- check number about spitting back classic rock lyrics ("You were right when you said all we are is dust in the wind/ You were right when you said that we're all just bricks in the wall"), although why he's doing it is a mystery.

Built To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
What makes most of Martsch's songs on Keep It Like a Secret so great is that his words never spell out the whole story, conveying their message though evocative lyrics always buoyed by the accompanying guitar work.
So while a song like "Carry the Zero" doesn't seem to be about anything in particular, lines like "you're so occupied with what other persons are occupied with and vice versa" convey such sorrow that when the guitar solos finally arrive, they do the crying for Martsch.
Overall Keep It Like a Secret is a great return to form for Built To Spill, whose Perfect From Now On had lost the focus, melody and feeling which had made their earlier There's Nothing Wrong With Love so fantastic.

Vaughan and Hendrix may be dead, and Page might seem like he is, but that's no reason to start listening to Dave Matthews and his Band acousticky of merry men.
Keep It Like a Secret should only further solidify their hold on this, rock's most elusive honor.
Perfect was an adventure through carefully constructed magical guitarscapes, and Secret simply continues this theme while shortening the tours and paying a bit more attention to the vocals and rhythm section.

By contrast, their new release Keep It Like A Secret spans 10 songs and only runs about 47 minutes, but it still manages to contain almost all the things that made the group so great on their last release.
The thing that's interesting about Keep It Like A Secret, though is that not only do most of the songs fit into a fairly radio friendly format, but they have the backing of a major label behind them.
Although there are still a couple tracks that linger on for quite awhile (like the awesome album-closer "Broken Chairs."), this disc is much more concise and even more interesting than their last release.

As a songwriter and guitarist, Built to Spill's Doug Martsch has "a firm background in remembering," as he sings in "Bad Light," on the band's beguiling new album, Keep It Like a Secret.
There are traces of Lou Reed and the hyperwriting of '66 Bob Dylan in Secret's lyric mix of run-on, conversational syntax and curveball wordplay ("I can't be your apologist very long/I'm surprised that you'd want to carry that on/Count your blemishes, you can't, they're all gone" -- "Carry the Zero").
In comparison, Keep It Like a Secret is tightly wound clang, effectively understated in spots.
