The Keeshond is a medium-sized, square-appearing, sturdy dog, neither coarse nor lightly made.
The Keeshond is to be shown in a natural state with trimming permissible only on feet, pasterns, hocks and--if desired--whiskers.

Acceptable variations of Keeshond color and markings include a dark body coat with sharply contrasting markings; a relatively light body coat with markings that are lighter still; and deeper shades of light grey in markings (except for the required very light grey plume) that contrast, but less sharply, with the body coat.

A correct Keeshond fur coat is actually a double coat consisting of a dense, woolly undercoat and an outer coat of “guard” hairs.
Additionally, Keeshonds which have undergone anesthesia will generally blow their coats shortly afterward, and bitches which have recently whelped litters will become completely naked within 8 to 12 weeks of whelping.
