  Naval Air Station Keflavik
The primary mission of Naval Air Station Keflavik is to maintain and operate facilities and provide services and material to support operations of aviation activities and units of the operating forces of the Navy and other activities and units, as designated by the Chief of Naval Operations.
On 01 January 1993, the Base Communications Office was officially transferred from NAS Keflavik to the operational and administrative control of NCTS Iceland.
From that date, NAS Keflavik as the Host command would be fully responsible for the maintenance of NCTSI facilities.

Preparations were recently finished to ready one of the oldest residents of Naval Air Station Keflavik for a trip to a new home.
The C-117D, which has been on the base since 1973, was removed from its stand in front of the NAS Keflavik headquarters building and will be transported to the Iceland Aviation Museum in northwest Iceland.
The C-117D first arrived at NAS Keflavik in September 1973 and was used as the station aircraft until April 1977.

After spending 12 1/2 hours of air time in an Illinois Air National Guard C-130 transport, members of the Headquarters Company (HHC) of the 164th Engineer Combat Battalion in Minot went directly to work Thursday morning planning their mission of erecting bus stops on base.
Although he has had limited interaction with Icelanders, he is looking forward to next Tuesday to change that when most of the group will circle the island in a highway tour.

Oddsson is hoping to convince the US to maintain a strong presence at the Keflavik base, which was an important American station during World War II and a NATO base during the Cold War, but which has seen its importance diminish considerably in recent years.
The US is bound by a 53-year-old defense treaty requiring it to provide Iceland, which has no military of its own, with a sufficient defense.
In May last year however, US ambassador to Iceland James Gadsden told Oddsson, then the prime minister, that the last four F-14 fighter jets would be moved from the Keflavik base, effectively leaving Iceland without an air defense.
