Keicar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Keicar (K-car), also called keijidōsha (in Japanese: 軽自動車 light motor vehicle), is a Japanese category of small automobiles, including passenger cars and also vans and pick-up trucks for commercial use.
They are mainly designed for sale in Japan, because there are some tax and insurance relaxations and an exemption from the usual requirement of certification of park space that one has adequate parking space at his or her home or has contract for a parking spot.
The keicar field is very competitive, so that manufacturers are in a constant race to provide better performance, utility, and fun within the keicar regulations, driving the pace of technological innovation, which then spreads to the rest of their automobile line.

 Mitsubishi Minica
In April, 1976 the keicar regulations were revised, and the car and wagon received a new 471 cc engine, a small increase in length, and a new name, the "Minica 5".
The fourth generation Minica was introduced in February, 1984 as a front wheel drive vehicle in a three door and a five door configuration, again increased in size, and with a torsion beam axle with coil springs at the rear.
In December, 1994 the Minica's response to the SUV craze was introduced as the "Mitsubishi Pajero Mini", with its own dedicated platform featuring a shorter wheelbase, four wheel drive, and a choice of either of the four cylinder engines.

 Neat Stuff From Japan
Keicars are smaller, lighter vehicles designed to better accommodate the cramped driving conditions within Japanese cities.
Cheaper to buy and maintain, keicars are also subject to lower vehicle taxes and insurance rates and are often exempt from the Japanese law requiring proof of parking space for new car purchases (someone actually comes to your home to verify that you have a place to park your new futsuusha car).
Keicars are easily identified in Japan by their smaller size and yellow license plates (please see the comparison photo above) as well as their cute design and interesting English names.

The Wankel "rotary" engines outperformed their piston-based competitors by a large margin, and Mazda made the most of the powerplant by putting it in almost every product they sold, from the Rotary Pickup to the RX-7, and even the large Luce sedan.
The only exception was the Mazda Chantez keicar, because other car makers vetoed the move.
In other words, the Mazda Carol is sold at the Autozam store (which specializes in keicars), but it is sold with the Mazda marque, not as the Autozam Carol as it once was.

Keicar explained   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
These relatively relaxed standards came from the post-WWII days when most Japanese were too poor to buy a full sized car, yet had more than enough money to buy a motorcycle.
In Japan, the cars feature yellow licence plates, earning them the name "yellow-plate cars" in English-speaking circles.
As a result, keicars are available with turbo-charged engines, automatic transmission, 4-Wheel-Drive as well as Hybrids.

The R1 is a two-door version of the Subaru R2, but with a shorter body and wheelbase.
The R1 is unique in that it doesn't use up the maximum length allowed for by the keicar regulations - the last keicar to have done this was the 1989 Autozam Carol.
