Keil do Amaral already had considerable experience in designing public spaces and facilities for transport operators; he was responsible for the first terminal building at Lisbon's Portela Airport (replaced on the 1970s by a new one).
Her work for the Lisbon Underground is of particular importance in that it marked a turning point in the revival of the Portuguese art of the glazed painted tile or "azulejo", which had gone through a long period of decline from the 19th century until the first half of the 20th century.
Indeed, from the early 1950s onwards Maria Keil became the principal driving force in the discovery of new artistic possibilities for the azulejo and thus helped to revive and reinstate many traditional techniques that had long fallen into disuse.

II Journal: Modern Architecture Redux: Portugal
Political repression and economic injustice promoted historical isolation; however, one inadvertently fortunate consequence of this isolation was that Portuguese architects could observe the ill effects of modern urban planning elsewhere in Europe.
In contradistinction to the Estado Novo's program of purportedly Portuguese architecture, the architects of the Sindicato Nacional dos Arquitectos under Keil Amaral's leadership proposed to investigate the historical morphology of Portuguese architecture and cities.
They sought, on the one hand, to counter what they perceived as the pseudo-historical claims used to legitimize the Estado Novo's program of architecture, and on the other, to build a body of knowledge about the forms of their cities and towns that would offer a basis of logic for any future process of intervention.

Their roots within entirely different urban, climatic, technological, material, and social circumstances, and the contrasting uniformity of many towns and countrysides of Portugal, made these new buildings appear quite bizarre.
Architects, led initially by Keil Amaral and later including Tavora, sought in the traditional vernacular a model of architecture to which they could look as a remedy.
They do say that the buildings reflect, although not in types or specific architectural elements, "something of the character of our people" in terms of a tendency to domesticate and turn "humble" certain traits of the baroque.
