The memorial bust was presented by William Stewart and appropriately accepted by provost Nan Hardie Hughes, Keir Hardie's daughter, in August 1939, on the eve of World War 2.
A magnificent bronze bust of James Keir Hardie, renowned as the founder of the Labour Party stands on a pink granite plinth outside Cumnock Town Hall.
Since James Keir Hardie lived for the majority of his life in Cumnock, The National Keir Hardie Memorial Committee commissioned the sculptor Benno Schotz RSA, to create the bronze bust.

The Stirlings of Kippendavie descend from The Stirlings of Keir.
Archibald Stirling of Kippendavie was the third son of Sir Archibald Stirling of Keir and Cadder by his second marriage to Grizell, daughter of James, Lord Ross.
The Battle of Sheriffmuir was fought here in 1715 between supporters of the English King led by the Duke of Argyll and supporters of the Stewart's right to the throne led by John Erskine the Earl of Mar. It also happened on land owned then and now by members of the Stirling family of Kippendavie.

A key event in the history of The Durutti Column was the arrival of Keir Stewart as producer.
The Durutti Column would strongly begin the nineties by releasing the album 'Obey The Time' on Factory Records, yet by the end of 1992 Factory Records would go bust and there would be little or no output from the group.
The vacant ‘post’ of Durutti Column manager was filled by Phil Jones, a friend of the group who had known Bruce Mitchell since the late Seventies.
