Topic: Keith Giffen

Five Years Into The future: Before and After
Keith Giffen explains: "The Legion needed a starting point; it needed a point wherein we could reach new readers and also satisfy the old" So, without ignoring the Legion's past, DC followed Giffen's lead and advanced the series into the future.
Keith Giffen Tom and Mary Bierbaum, and mark Waid all agree that one of the key elements to the Legion's longevity is the teams bond of camaraderie.
Giffen adds that a secondary, but vital, element behind the Legions success is the series optimistic future, a rarity among other modes of speculative fiction which paint the future as a bleak, hopeless place.

The 21st Century seems to be Giffen friendly, as he currently has regular work with several companies and hardly a week goes by without something with his name on appearing on the shelves.

Giffen seemed happy to be revamping the script, "One of the good things is that I'm turning it back into my vision after a lot of people got involved and tickled with it for a while," the writer said.
Giffen talked to us about the differences between the long form of comic book story telling and the more concise movie story structure.

Paperback Reader : Review of Formerly Known as the Justice League
Maxwell Lord, amoral businessman and midwife to Giffen and Dematteis's League, is back with a new scheme: recruit a bunch of familiar faces from his glory days with the team and build a non-profit community service organization around them, complete with a 1-800 number and, presumably, many, many tax breaks.
Giffen and Dematteis don't ignore continuity (they even manage to work in some jokes about the alleged heart condition Blue Beetle was revealed to have in Birds of Prey), but they don't allow their story to be hamstrung by it either.
The only time they’ve ever been taken seriously is when they’ve been separated, and Giffen and Dematteis use this to their advantage, enhancing the comedy by turning Beetle into the straight man of this two-man show.

TwoMorrows Publishing - Keith Giffen Interview - Kirby Collector Twentyninth Issue
Keith Giffen entered the field of comics at Marvel in the '70s with a very Kirbyesque style.
KEITH: No, when he was over at Marvel, when he took over Iron Man. Actually my first real solid exposure to him was when Giant-Man, who was my all-time favorite Marvel character, was thrown out of Tales to Astonish and Sub-Mariner came in.
KEITH: That was not in the original plot.

Keith would go tell Paul Levitz, “Look, when they appear in our book we’re going to twist them all out of shape, but I promise to put them back at the end.” I always liked half those characters better in our book anyway.
Keith would lay out the book, set up the situations and wonderful jokes but I was totally free to do whatever I wanted.

The legacy of John Ostrander, the series' previous caretaker, is strong among fandom assembled, and while Giffen is promising to deliver dense storytelling, spectacular missions, and overall, more bang for your buck, his work is still very much cut out for him.
Keith spoke candidly to me about working on the book, his upcoming projects and, of all things, the Planet of the Apes re-imagining by Tim Burton...
GIFFEN: Yeah, it's sort of a dream scene with Sandman which is going to be with all of the modern characters, but I'm going to draw it like 1940s Kirby.

Giffen and Richie keep the story hopping, shifting back and forth from flashback mode, jumping from scene to scene in a seemingly random fashion.
Giffen's rough artwork is in keeping with that puzzling, random and vague nature of the plot and script.
That's too bad, because Giffen captures the creepy feel of the main Superman-like character and the surrounding weirdos quite well in the visuals.

heckled, Keith Giffen unleashed Ambush Bug on the DC Universe.
Ambush Bug was perhaps the first DC Comic character to be actively aware of his status as a comic book character, and he regularly broke the fourth wall separating reader from the action, speaking directly to the audience.
Giffen recounted a few elements of the Ambush Bug madness from that era, such as the time assistant editor Andy Helfer had to go into Julie Schwartz's office and explain to one of the grand old men of DC Comics why Giffen's script set in the Vietnamese province of Poontang couldn't be published as-was.

 The Keith Giffen Interview
Keith Giffen came to prominence as a comic-book storyteller in the 1980s, working with Paul Levitz on the Legion of Super-Heroes and with Andy Helfer and Kevin Maguire on the relaunched Justice League.
Keith has undergone more artistic incarnations than have just about any of his colleagues over the years; you'd swear that the Keith Giffen who drew the Challengers of the Unknown in the 1970s wasn't the same man who drew the Legion in the early '80s or who did Lobo and Trencher in the '90s.
There were a number of comments from people about how Keith is coming back and everything is going to change, as though you were the driving force, totally, behind the book now that you're back.
