	Keith Levene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Keith Levene is a British guitarist and songwriter, probably best known as a member of Public Image Limited.
		Levene was an early member of The Clash and the one-shot The Flowers of Romance (most notable for also featuring a pre-Sex Pistols Sid Vicious).
		Levene would later claim he had written or co-written several other songs on the same record.

		Lydon also launched an effort to locate guitarist Keith Levene (né Julian Levene), whom he had met on tour in mid-1976 while Levene was a member of The Clash.
		Levene was a very small, skinny person, of the sort that one thinks of as 'runty.' 		Keith Levene went from being a Yes roadie to one of the founding members of the Clash, making him one of the few connecting figures between the prog world and the punk world.
		It seemed that as Levene was living his post-PiL life, releasing a handful of scraps and making a few, unnoticed, guest appearances, he was trying to apply this ethos to his own life, perhaps consciously avoiding making a full musical statement (the decision, of course, an oblique musical statement all of its own).
		It is true that Levene is playing all the instruments, but the guitar has always been the "personality" instrument in rock and roll, and by limiting the effectiveness of his signature instrument on these tracks, he seems to be content on continuing to pull a Lydon on himself and erase himself from his own music.

		Levene was eventually voted out of the band, somewhere between mid-August and mid-September of 1976, prior to the recording of their first record; while many claim it was drugs that led to his forced departure, Levene claims it had more to do with a power struggle between himself and Jones.
		Levene then played in the Flowers of Romance (a group named by John Lydon), with Viv Albertine, Palmolive, and Sid Vicious, but the band's lifespan was cut short by Vicious' defection to the Sex Pistols as the replacement of Glen Matlock.
		Levene and Lydon had agreed to start a band together upon the Pistols' dissolution and followed through on the plan; Levene's six-year stint with the group spawned their best records, most of which obliterated the standards of rock & roll.

		Wobble's bass tone was called "impossibly deep" by contemporary reviews, and Levene's uniquely sharp guitar sound (Levene played an all-aluminum Veleno guitar, and a mostly-aluminum Travis Bean Wedge) was widely imitated, most notably by The Edge of the then-fledgling U2.
		Atkins, who had initially joined at the tail end of the Metal Box sessions (most tracks on that album were played by Richard Dudanski), was re-recruited to drum on The Flowers of Romance, an album considered much stranger and more difficult than the already strange Metal Box.
		Lydon and Atkins claim that he stole the tapes, while Levene's claim is, in effect, that posession is nine-tenths of the law.

	Tangents fun'n'frenzy filled web site.
		One LP surfaced in 1989 and there was a series of obscure collaborations (including playing alongside Glen Matlock for a while), but nothing came out that --in those pre-Internet days-- Joe Punter was going to be able to lay his hands on with any ease.
		And now the good news: Keith is back, looking rather less like an angelic blond guttersnipe and rather more like Chris Langham, with an EP, Killer in the Crowd and some possibility of a new LP in the offing.

		Public Image Ltd. (PiL) originally was a quartet led by singer John Lydon (formerly Johnny Rotten b.Jan 31, 1956) and guitarist Keith Levene, who had been a member of the Clash in one of its early lineups.
		Lydon and Levene, plus hired musicians, made up the group by the time of The Flowers of Romance (1981), the much-acclaimed fourth album, which reached #11 in the U.K. In 1983, PiL scored its biggest U.K. hit, when "This Is Not a Love Song" reached #5.
		By this time, however, Levene had left, and the name from here on would be, more than anything else, a vehicle for John Lydon (though with a comparatively steady lineup).

		The music is famous for its abstract, avant-garde nature, including a huge bass sound derived from dub music, for a unique, literally 'metallic' guitar sound (guitarist Keith Levene played aluminum-constructed guitars), and for its sonic high-fidelity due to the 12", 45rpm format.
		A paper insert lists the album's personnel as "John Lydon - Keith Levene - Wobble - Jeanette Lee - Dave Crowe," though the latter two individuals were the band's videographer and accountant, respectively.
		The credits also do not mention that Lydon was the vocalist, Levene played electric guitar and synthesizer, and Wobble was the bassist.
