VALENCY - LoveToKnow Article on VALENCY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Kekul always maintained that valency could not vary and in discussing this question Professor Japp goes so far as to say: Of all the doctrines which we owe to Kekulh, that of fixed valency is probably the one that has met with least acceptance even among chemists of his own school.
And such a fact cannot be overlooked: that Kekul went too far in asserting that valency could not vary is probably true; the essential feature in his objectionthat in many cases valency was overestimated by the Frankland schoolcannot be so easily disposed of.
The greatest difficulty of all that we have to meet is due to the fact that valency is a dependent variable in the case of many if not of most elements, the degree in which it is manifest depending on the reciprocal affinities of the associating elements, as well as on environmental conditions.

Friedrich August Kekulé von Stradonitz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Friedrich August Kekulé von Stradonitz (September 7, 1829 – July 13, 1896) was a German organic chemist.
Kekulé claimed to solve the problem of how carbon atoms could bond to up to four other atoms at the same time.
In 1895 Kekulé was ennobled by Emperor William II, giving him the right to add "von Stradonitz" to his name, referring to an ancient possession of his family in Stradonice, Bohemia.

Kekulé's oscillation theory of rapidly interchanging double bonds in the benzene ring explained the existence of only one disubstituted derivative in various syntheses--a problem that his earlier conception of the ring structure of benzene did not address.
In 1890 came a highpoint in Kekulé's life--the celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the benzene ring theory at the Duetsche Chemische Gesellshaft in Berlin.

Prior to this experience, Kekul&eacu; had assumed that all organic molecules are based on strings of carbon atoms (he himself had produced the string-theory some years earlier).
Kekule might have had a similar reaction if he had been out on a country walk and happened to see a snake with its tail in its mouth.
And Kekul&eacu; was an expert chemist, who knew that the behaviour of a molecule depends partly on how the constituent atoms are juxtaposed.

Friedrich August Kekulé von Stradonitz (1829 - 1896) was a German organic chemist.
He made studies of various carbon compounds, especially benzene, for the structure of which he developed the ring theory and valences, in 1857 Kekulé proposed that carbon was tetravalent.

August Kekule von Stradonitz --  Britannica Concise Encyclopedia - The online encyclopedia you can trust!
He became a lecturer at the University of Heidelberg (1856) and professor of chemistry at Ghent, Belg.
One night in 1865 Kekule dreamed of the benzene molecule as a snake biting its tail while in whirling motion.
From that vision his concept of the six-carbon benzene ring was born, and the facts of organic chemistry known up to that time fell into place.

KekulÈís discovery of the benzene ring was, for example, prompted by a daydream where KekulÈ saw a snake bite its tail.
The snake formed a ring, which gave KekulÈ the idea that the molecular structure of benzene might be organized in a similar way [22].
