The Kelabit Highlands are on a picturesque flat plateau in the north-eastern corner of Sarawak.
The Kelabit Highlands is the homeland of the Kelabit.
Over a century ago, the Kelabits were involved in head hunting raids, not so much for ritual purposes but as a means to prove one’s courage, bravery, guts or valency, and to get even with their enemy.

On 28 September 1963 a small, successful (though strategically irrelevant) raid was conducted by the Indonesians on the village of Long Jawe, almost wiping out the entire Gurkha Rifles garrison.
In early 1964, Indonesian attacks managed to render the strategic Tebedu-Serian-Kuching road unsafe for months, and additional small scale air raids were launched in the Kelabit highlands on civilian settlements.
One Indonesian raiding party en route to the small town of Song was captured by locals and handed over to the Malaysian authorities in April 1964.

I conclude that the Kelabit community is adopting more formal modes of association and that Christianity plays a dominant role in influencing the selective maintenance of traditional and nontraditional practices.
In identifying some of the important contestations of Kelabit identity and culture and articulations of Kelabit ethnicity, I seek to contribute to the understanding of processes of ethnic-identity formation and group maintenance as well as processes of sociocultural change.

In the 1998/9 academic year, he will be taking up a new post in the Department of Education at the University of Leicester, England.
Peter Martin’s main interests include: (1) description and analysis of the minority languages in Brunei (and Borneo), particularly Belait, Tutong (and Kelabit) and the sociolinguistic study of the use of these languages in local community contexts; (2) description of the variety of English spoken in Brunei; (3) codeswitching in multilingual classroom contexts.
Peter Martin did his Ph.D. degree at Lancaster (1993-1997).The focus of his doctoral research was on how teachers and pupils in three primary classrooms in Brunei accomplished lessons in two (or more) languages and on their bilingual interactions around monolingual texts.

 Spiders
Reply:The photo taken in New Guinea from 3rd October is a Nephila species, maybe Nephila maculata (golden orb-weaver).
It was taken in Sarawak, East Malaysia (Borneo) in the Kelabit Highlands between Bario and Batu Lawi.
The spider was pretty big (about 20cm) across from toe to toe, very hairy and living in a tree hole at 2m height.
