Kele Okereke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kele Okereke (born October 13, 1981) is the vocalist and guitarist for English art rock band Bloc Party.
Okereke is a shy and private person, considered to be more concerned with his music than his media image.
As a songwriter, Okereke's approach is somewhat unconventional.

Okereke's quartet is being hailed as a front-runner of the budding new Britpop II movement, along with such other rising young groups as Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and the Futureheads.
Okereke's reluctance has a solid foundation, regardless of the fact that Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand and their peers are delivering a welcome dose of vitality to rock, which is fighting to regain a foothold in an era dominated by rant-by-numbers hip-hop and "American Idol"-styled lobotomy-pop.
Okereke sent the band's demo tape to Franz Ferdinand, which promptly invited the fledgling group to be the opening act on its next tour.

The versatile band is as rambunctious on stage as it is nuanced in the studio, locking in as an interplaying unit and inciting crowds into unabashed, upbeat panic.
Okereke is aware of the added expectations placed on a follow-up, especially given the hype heaped onto baby bands like the Arctic Monkeys in his native country.

Okereke does cite such other late '70s/early '80s acts as Public Image Ltd. and ESG as influences; like Gang and Bloc, those acts mixed dance rhythms with their punk energy.
Okereke isn't being cagey or purposefully ambiguous, as the leader of many super-hyped, over-interviewed bands such as Bloc Party often are.
Perhaps unsurprisingly for a musician so myopically attuned to the nuance of his music, Okereke is at least as proud of the microscopics of his songs as he is of the impression they make overall.

The players were unified only in the conviction of what they didn't want to be, given their disgust for the state of U.K. rock, says Okereke, who was born in Nigeria and grew up in East London.
Eager to tour the United Kingdom but frustrated by the lack of like-minded peers, Okereke read an interview two years ago with Alex Kapranos, the singer in the then-relatively unknown Scottish band Franz Ferdinand, and recognized a kindred spirit.

You get angular, back-and-forth guitars, telegraphic riffs, intelligent hyper-aware lyrics, a butter-smooth chorus, sudden stops, countermelodies, a relentless pile-driver of a bridge, and a chanted outro in which Kele Okereke's desperate vocals play laser tag with Russell Lissack's whammied-out lead.
Songs such as “Helicopter” and “Price Of Gas” are remarkably direct and unflinching in their critique, and are written in the terse, stingingly poetic voice of a prophetic true believer.
Yet singer Kele Okereke is energetic and optimistic enough that the group’s politics never get in the way of the groove- rarely has a pop band made intelligent social commentary so irresistibly danceable.

GM: I think that was the problem that Kele and Russell had from the beginning, because they really formed the band—the two of them on guitar.
When Kele’s got a part, we listen to how it can be complemented with a melodic or rhythmic part.

dOc DVD Review: God Bless Bloc Party (2005)
Bloc Party is one of the best British imports making rock safe for music lovers right now; the band exploded in England in 2005 and made a splash in the US indie world with the release of their first full-length album, Silent Alarm, last February.
Lead singer Kele Okereke has a distinct, unmistakable voice (he's also one of those rare Brits who still has an accent when he sings), and the band (Matt Tong on drums, Gordon Moakes on bass, and Russell Lissack on guitar) is tight and cohesive particularly during live shows.
Most of the focus is on lead singer Kele Okereke, but he seems less than interested in talking about the music or his creative process, sometimes trailing off in the middle of sentences or forgetting questions entirely.

Their album, “Silent Alarm,” on hip indie label Dim Mak comes out later in March, but they have a few tracks for download on their website and singles were just released January 25.
While their sound is definitely post-punk (imagine Gang of Four mashed up with English Beat), this Brit band mixes it up with the ballad-like song “Tulips,” where Kele’s vocals are reminiscent of Morrissey.

Crutch Music Review: Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Taking their cues as much from pre-Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me-era Cure as they do from cohorts like Moving Units and The Rapture, Bloc Party’s sound has strayed from the disco-inflected glitter of their early efforts to a more punk and new wave inflected approach on their debut full-length.
Okereke and Russell Lissack’s six-strings intertwine and diverge throughout the course of the record, shifting from single eighth-note picking to melodic and intermingled chord structures.
Okereke begins the verse with a playful shout / sung melody before a start / stop syncopated bridge leads into yet another catchy chorus, Okereke singing “Are you hoping for a miracle?” However, the more introspective and sedate side of the scale is given due treatment as well.

Lead vocalist Kele Okereke suffered voice strain as the night progressed, which lead to a shortened set and only two encore songs.
Despite Okereke’s problems, Bloc Party literally did not miss a beat through eight songs, with drummer Matt Tong cleverly filling time with ambitious, but well-executed rolls, and signature snare drum and hi-hat driven rhythms.
