Topic: Kelewan

Riftwar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first Riftwar between Midkemia and Kelewan is described in the trilogy The Riftwar Saga.
Four years passed, and Pug was working as a slave in a swamp camp on Kelewan, the Tsurani homeworld, with a newcomer, Laurie of Tyr-Sog, a minstrel.
In Kelewan, Pug and his companions were captured in ambush by Great Ones of the Assembly of Magicians for his role in the destruction of the Imperial Arena a year ago.

Empire Trilogy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Written from a female perspective, it traces the story of Mara of the Acoma's rise to power from a convent novitiate to the most powerful woman on Kelewan.
The Warlord who rules on behalf of the Emperor in the first two books is analogous to the shogun in Japan's Feudal Age.
Similar to Japan, Kelewan has a hot climate and suffers from a lack of raw materials, particularly metal.

The Cho-ja are a race of insectoids in Kelewan.
Due to their peaceful nature before the humans showed up, they had little to no defense against them and were therefore easily overtaken.
After the Valheru were destroyed, the Eldar migrated to Kelewan, where they set up a city under the northern ice cap.

Ex Libris Reviews: 1 November 1999
Kelewan, whose Tsurani Empire is invading Midkemia, is more distantly based on M.A.R. Barker's Empire of the Petal Throne role-playing game.
How she does so is an intriguing tale, and if it seemed a little too easy on a fourth reading, it most certainly did not on the first reading.
Wurts brings Kelewan to life in a way Feist never managed to do (as he would be the first to admit).

I am deeply saddened that there will never be another Kelewan book, or so Feist himself says in his official FAQ *sigh*.
Also, on October 29, 2000 I sent an e-mail to Janny Wurts asking about Kelewan (I'd heard rumors she was planning a new series set there).
She replied and said that neither she nor Ray have any plans for any projects set in Kelewan.

A magical bridge or rift opens between Midkemia and another world Kelewan (based on mediaeval Japan) and a war starts between the Kingdom of Krondor and invaders from across the rift.
Co-written with Janny Wurts is a series of books set at the same time as the Riftwar trilogy which deal with politics across the Rift in Kelewan, where house is pitted against house and a girl fights for the survival of her house.
The story is in three action-packed volumes: Daughter of the Empire, Servant of the Empire and Mistress of the Empire.

Dennis Hartraft was forced into the Riftwar on his wedding night, when a band of Kelewan warriors raided his father's holding, killing everyone who was dear to Dennis.
Nine years later, he holds a hatred of the enemy close to his heart and a desire to ensure that all the Kelewan soldiers involved in the attack are killed.
However there are indications that a moredhel, or fl elf, threat is also in the area and the two forces' only hope of surviving the moredhel is to work together.

Kelewan is actually one of the most original settings in epic fantasy.
Because it's all in Kelewan, are far more interesting, intriguing and original place.
Feist was the first non-children's fantasy other than LotR I read, so I was able to forgive most of the Tolkienesque elements because I wasn't used to it.

Should the Empire Series Continue? - Science-Fiction & Fantasy forums
There is one issue that might cause Mr Feist to not have the Kelewan issue raised again...
I think maybe he could do more books in Kelewan, but I don't think the Empire series itself should continue, or it'll becomes stale like the Midkemia ones.
Its probably best to leave it as it is, so we can still think of the Empire series as a masterpiece, without having lots of other inferior books plaguing the same setting.

But our hardy band of magicians and adventurers have more to deal with than aliens, as they battle evil on their home turf - everything from dark elves to the Emerald Queen and her serpent army, as well as perennial rivals from the land of Kesh.
Raymond Fiest's Riftwar books are based on the premise that a spacetime "rift" has been created between the magical fantasy world of our heroes, Midkemia (a fairly straight-forward magical medieval kingdom) and Kelewan, world of war-mongering empire-builders (a fabulously complex blend of Samurai, Aztec and Roman empire).
As the Tsurani (from Kelewan) enter and seek to subjugate their world (Midkemia), friends Pug and Tomas, along with other terrific characters, such as Prince Arutha, must use their magical and fighting abilities to fend off the threat.

The Books of Raymond E. Feist
The beginning of the war against the Tsurani, the Riftwar, is one of this book's strongest elements with it starting as vague hints and indirect evidence until finally it evolves into a fierce battle for the survival of the Kingdom.
What I liked about this duality is the way in which Midkemia and Kelewan are very much parallel worlds and that the Tsurani are invading out of political necessity rather than being the hoardes of some Dark Lord.
This latter element is one of my favourite as we get to compare the friendship of of the greatest magician alive and the last of the dragonlords to their friendship in 'Magician', when they were just Pug and Tomas of Crydee Keep.

The Riftwar Saga primarily tells the story of Pug the Magician, through his apprenticeship and eventually his mastery of magic, during the Riftwar.
The Empire series is set in Kelewan and describes the power struggles there, and is quite oriental in culture and themes.

 The Empire Trilogy
It remains focused around one character who continues to grow and change over a period of a little over twenty years, and the quality of the writing and the inspiration is as good in the final volume as in the first.
These baffling actions, left largely unexplained in the Riftwar Saga, are part of complex political activity on Kelewan, referred to as the Game of Council, in which families and clans conspire against each other in power struggles in which the riftwar is only a minor factor, and is usually irrelevant.
In the final volume, Mara engages in a second blood feud with the Anasati, the family of her first husband, who have never forgiven her for his death in the first book.

The Empire Trilogy is set on Kelewan, a society largely based on Japanese culture, central to which is the concept of honour.
One of its major themes is how Kelewan struggles to come to grips with social progression and crumbling tradition, brought on by interplanetary influences.
The Last Samurai is a really nice period piece, set in the late 19th century, where international influences and scheming bureaucrats who lack any honour at all have all but swept away the old Samurai order.

Anthropologically speaking, the parallels which Wurts and Feist have drawn between the different "families" on Kelewan and the different cultures in our world are fascinating!
There are many similarities between ancient Japanese cultures and the worlds of Kelewan (the concepts of honor and ritual suicide being the strongest), but there also appears the odd parallel to ancient Mayan and Incan society, and the peoples outside the Empire remind strongly of Russian, Viking and Bedouin cultures.
When the "barbarians" from Midkemia are brought over, there is a clash between their culture and that of the Tsuranni which is extremely redolent of east vs. west (the Midkemians ride horses, they have metal, their concept of honor is vastly different, etc.)
