By coincidence, the captain of the Resolute was Henry Kellett, the same captain to whom, in 1850 near Bering Strait, McClure had argued disingenuously that he needed to proceed into the arctic to catch up to Collinson aboard the Enterprise.
Kellett ordered the Investigator abandoned and all of McClure’s surviving crew distributed among the ships in Belcher’s fleet.

After a couple of abortive attempts at settlement and protracted diplomatic argument, Wrangel Island is now occupied by a small team of Russian scientists and their supporting community who maintain a meteorological and research base at Ushakovskoye on the Southern coast.
A good part of the reason Wrangel Island was chosen for this extreme survival exercise is the abundance of wildlife.
Ironically, Wrangel Island also escaped glaciation in the last Ice Age, leaving several unique species of vascular plants and was probably the last place on Earth to support a woolly mammoth population.

Tatoosh Island is accessible only by boat and can be seen from the end of the Cape Flattery Trail and the viewing platform there.

Late in the summer of 1914, George Wilkins, expedition photographer, took the schooner Mary Sachs from Herschel Island to Banks Island with supplies for Stefansson's Party.
The Northern Party spent the early winter of 1914-1915 at the base established by Wilkins near Cape Kellett, known then as the "Kellett Base," now known as Mary Sachs.

Hong Kong is made up of three areas, Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, and I am told repeatedly by residents who know New York that one should never compare them to Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.
Kowloon and Hong Kong Island are separated by Victoria Harbor, a body of water that has been steadily encroached upon by the two sides of the city, and the New Territories are a short drive north of Kowloon.
The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (Kellett Island, Causeway Bay 2239-0314) tantalized me as I failed to gain entry, but The China Club (the Old Bank of China Building, 13F/ Bank St., 2521-8888), located in Central, can be traversed by a decent concierge.

South Brunswick qualified seven swimmers — Brittany Genovese-Baker, Danielle Stiller, Emily Kincer, Jessica Kellett, Kristen Halcomb, Josh Criscoe and Michael Dixon — for Saturday’s championships, and the girls 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams swam their best times of the year during the preliminary round to qualify for the finals.
The Cougars’ 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Stiller, Kellett, Halcomb and Kincer finished 10th overall, setting a school record with a time of 1:56.48.
With Kellett and Stiller returning next season, and a promising freshman class coming up, the future of South Brunswick swimming is bright, Cross said.

In June, 1647, Michael Stadukin, a Cossack, was sent from Nijni Kolymsk to discover an island, or land separated from the continent, which was reported as being visited by the Chukchees, with reindeer in winter, over the ice.
This reported land may have been Wrangell Land, but was more probably the small islands off the mouth of the Kol ma River ; still, if the latter was the case, it seems singular that he did not reach them without difficulty.

In 1911 the famous icebreakers, Tamyr and Vaygach, as part of the Russian Arctic Ocean Hydrographic Expedition (1910-15) briefly landed a party on Wrangel Island and claimed it for Russia.
That’s exactly what the UNESCO World Heritage committee did in 2004 when it included Wrangel Island on its list of global ecological hotspots, describing it as a “self-contained island ecosystem” with “the highest level of biodiversity in the high Arctic”.
Naturalists, ecologists, archaeologists, “twitchers” and regular tourists in search of the unusual are now part of the minor throng that venture north every year from Anadyr in the helicopter-equipped Khlebnikov.
