Frank Kelly Freas (27 August 1922 – 2 January 2005), called the "Dean of Science Fiction Artists", was one of the most prolific and popular science fiction and fantasy artists.
Freas was born in Hornell, New York, United States, and educated at Lafayette High School in Buffalo, where he received training from long-time art teacher Elizabeth Weiffenbach.
In 1990 Kelly married (and is survived by) Dr. Laura Brodian.

It occurred while he was in the Army Air Corp during WWII and sending his paintings of "pin-up" girls on the noses of bombers and fighter escorts to Germany.

Freas was well known for being an integral part of the early days of Mad Magazine, starting in February of 1957 and becoming the regular cover painter from July, 1958 until October of 1962.
Freas also created the shoulder patch for Skylab 1 Astronauts and has six posters he created for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration collected and in the Smithsonian Institute.
