SI.com - Hockey - Lemieux will return to Penguins for another season - Thursday July 31, 2003 06:12 PM
Lemieux, long the star, expects to be the bridge between the high-scoring, highly paid Penguins of the past and the Kids 'R Us Penguins of the future.
Lemieux pointed out how Igor Larionov and Chris Chelios, among others, have been productive NHL players into their 40s, and that the rugged, year-around conditioning that is a must for top players could prolong his career.
Lemieux also understands the Penguins made the mistake of trying to stay with their freewheeling, fast-tempo European style well after many top teams shifted their emphasis to defense.

Penguins Notebook: No. 1 pick may live in Lemieux's house
Fleury has accepted an invitation from Mario Lemieux, the team's owner and No. 1 center, to stay at Lemieux's house in Sewickley while he adjusts to the area and professional hockey.
Lemieux has done that for other young players -- he made a similar offer to goalie Sebastien Caron last season -- and joked that his motivation isn't entirely altruistic.
Lemieux got an excellent start a year ago despite sitting out every preseason game, so he isn't concerned about how the large gap between the exhibition finale Sunday in Columbus and the regular-season opener will affect his game.

There was definitely some doubt in Mario Lemieux's mind about coming back this season, based on the way he handled the final game of last season and the fact that no one close to him was 100 percent sure he was going to be back.
Lemieux was all but ready to retire again in April after a second straight dismal Penguins season, but he now looks relaxed and seems re-energized.

The Penguins were 59-73 on faceoffs in their first two games, and do not have anyone who has won more than he lost.
For all the talk of rebuilding and a youth movement, the Penguins' lineup is well-stocked with thirty-something veterans such as Lemieux, Eastwood, Kelly Buchberger, Reid Simpson, Brian Holzinger, Steve McKenna, Drake Berehowsky and Marc Bergevin who are counted on to provide leadership and stability.

Lemieux and Feldmann had originally worked together in the early 1990s in the band Electric Love Hogs, which broke up, sending Feldmann to Goldfinger and Lemieux to 22 Jacks.
