Sotherton was born in Newport on the Isle of Wight.
For a period in 2006, Sotherton is ranked 3rd in the world in Heptathlon behind Carolina Klüft of Sweden and Lyudmila Blonska of Ukraine.

While heptathlete Sotherton was enjoying her first Games gold, Jung chalked up his fifth in a week with victory in the 10-metre air pistol final.

International Athlete Kelly Sotherton visited the college on Tuesday 19th September along with a film crew to look at the College’s healthy students strategy.
The highlight of the day for the A/S students in PE was to conduct a question and answer session with the Commonwealth Gold medalist.
The questions were related to the theme of healthy eating and the students were able to get an insight to how Kelly prepares for her events in the heptathlon.
