Kelso is the county seat of Cowlitz County.
Kelso is 48 miles north of Portland, 125 miles south of Seattle, and 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean.

In fact, Kelso Depot was far more than a depot, for here the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad (later the Union Pacific) combined in a single building a depot, an employees boarding and rooming house, and a restaurant which served both employees and as a meal stop for passenger trains.
Kelso was near the beginning of the steepest part of the grade, and there was also an abundant water supply provided by nearby springs.
The Kelso Depot survives as a window into this past age, when the railroads were the primary means of transportation in a rapidly growing nation.

and there are many races at kelso and some seriouse downhill, i did not try them because i did not want to die, so i think kelso is a good place for any one frome beginner to adavance.
