Kelso was her first foal, a bit scrawny, a bit runty, and quite the handful.

Allaire C. du Pont, whose Bohemia Stable raced five-time Horse of the Year Kelso, died Jan. 6 at her Woodstock Farm in Chesapeake City, Md., at the age of 92.
A sportswoman who not only loved Thoroughbred horses but flying, fox hunting, stray animals, and tennis and who fought for the preservation of open land in the Chesapeake region, she was with family members when she died at her home of more than 50 years reportedly of natural causes.
Kelso was voted racing's Horse of the Year five years in a row from 1960-64, a record that still stands.

Many of the stakes Kelso won have been shortened up over the years, including the JC Gold Cup (2 miles for many years), the Woodward, etc. Some of these races I guess were not drawing full fields at the longer distances, and some have evoled into "prep" races for the Breeder's Cup.
Kelso was accompanied on the trip from Maryland by his companion for over 15 years, a gelding called Pete (who raced as Sea Spirit and won the New Jersey Futurity in 1961).
Kelso was 26 at the time and many said he looked as good as Forego who was 13 years younger.

But one of those wins was perhaps the biggest event in the history of horse racing: A match race between War Admiral and Seabiscuit at Pimlico that was heralded as a contest between East and West.
