		Annakin’s autobiography is something of a show-business rarity: He has a magnificent memory, recounts working with such industry giants as Walt Disney, Darryl Zanuck and Jack Warner, and isn't shy about revealing indiscretions, propositions and dalliances, including his own.
		If Annakin tells of his exasperation over trying to coax performances out of producers’ girlfriends, the bad behavior – and sometimes the drug problems – of certain stars, and the vagaries of international film financing, he’s providing tales that are as cautionary today as when he lived them.
		Ken Annakin has no such agenda and is as happy writing about a prop man as he is about a star.

		A varied career in the Civil Service, as a salesman and as a journalist, gave Annakin a broader experience of life than most British directors, and his first feature, Holiday Camp (1947), was made on the 'slice of life' principle.
		He is one of a select band of British directors trusted by Hollywood, and much of his work since has been for American companies, directing films such as The Longest Day (1962), Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965) and Battle of the Bulge (1965).
		Annakin was awarded with an OBE in 2002.

		No artistic great, Annakin prided himself on his ability to make commercial entertainment that appealed to the whole family and as such you'll find very few of his 50 feature films on any greatest 100 list.
		Recognised by his peers as one of the great British filmmakers of the post war era, Annakin recently received an OBE for his services to the film industry and was made a 'Disney Legend' in 2002, one of only two live action film directors to be so honoured.
		More practical in his approach than most film autobiographers, Annakin offers an array of hints and tips to the wannabe director, and is refreshingly forthright in his analysis of some of his less successful efforts.

		I never saw the film again until the premiere in Hollywood.
		Phil Yordan met me with a rather guilty look in the foyer and said "Look, Ken, my co-producer Milton Sperling tried to improve what you had edited, but we never got it back being as good again as your cut".
		That taught me that in such a situation you must always make a personal dupe of your work, so that if anyone plays around with it, you can put it back again.
