Boyer was one of fourteen children, and he and two brothers played major league baseball; Clete was also a third baseman, while Cloyd, was a pitcher.
From 1960-61, Boyer led the Cardinals in batting average (.304 and.329), home runs (32 and 24) and RBI (97 and 95).
Boyer managed for seven seasons in the minor leagues before he returned to the Cardinals and managed 18 games into the 1978 season.

After solid rookie and sophomore years, to Boyer's dismay he was sent to centerfield for most of the 1957 season, and GM Frank Lane criticized the soft-spoken Cardinal as an "unaggressive player." The arrival of Curt Flood in 1958 allowed Boyer to return to third base.
Boyer slumped in 1965 and was traded to the Mets for third baseman Charlie Smith and pitcher Al Jackson.
Boyer died of lung cancer in 1982, and his uniform number 14 was retired by the Cardinals in 1984.

When Boyer was managing the AAA Tulsa Oilers of the American Association in 1973, my sister and I went down to get his autograph on his 1964 baseball card (the Oilers were playing the Denver Bears at Mile High Stadium).
I'd prefer to think that Ken Boyer would have been the exception to that rule, although in today's fan environment, with the profit-seeking autograph hunter proliferating, I'm sure Boyer, who was a very aware guy, would have recognized the true fans from the profiteers and adjusted accordingly.

Taking an initial look at the numbers, it would appear that Brooks Robinson was the better player all around.  But taking a second look may give you a different perspective.
I am convinced that in their prime, I would have chosen Boyer over Robinson to play 3rd base.
Boyer should not be penalized because, he did not play 20 plus seasons, his record speaks for itself, I believe he belongs in the Hall of Fame.

James makes a considerable case for Simmons and Ken Boyer has being worthy of the HOF and actually assumed that Jim Rice would have been enshrined about the same time as Mike Schmidt.
I don't readily think of Boyer as a hall of famer, on the fringe is what I see him as, although if Santo goes in I'll vote for him immediately, but I've always stood behind putting Simba and Jim Ed in the hall.
Simba's reasons have long been well documented, he'd be in the hall already if he didn't play in the same league Johnny Lee Bench played in.
