The new 44th Congressional district, represented by Republican Ken Calvert, is the result of burgeoning population growth in Riverside and Orange Counties.
In the face of significant geographical change, the demographics and politics of the district remain similar to Representative Calvert’s old 43rd district because the Orange County communities added to the new district are similar to the Riverside County nucleus of the district.
The only way Calvert and the Republicans could lose their dominance is if an influx of minorities move into the city of Riverside, and demand more government programs from Calvert, whose voting record is well to the right on the political spectrum.
