Headlines - Ken Mehlman Changed the Way Republicans Target Voters - Stanford GSB
Mehlman, who also served as Bush’s chief policy advisor from 2001 to 2003, said it was not metrics alone, but what he called “transparent metrics,” that were really useful.
When Mehlman first started working for Bush in 1999 as a field director during his first campaign, he ignored the advice to attach himself to the president to help advance his own career and decided that he could be a more effective leader by working with people further down the totem pole.
Mehlman’s driven nature came through during his impassioned and high-energy address, but he said that he also worked to make his personal life a priority and would even turn down a meeting with an influential politician if it meant skipping his cherished exercise time.

MEHLMAN:  I don't think that the numbers are there.  The fact is the launching of a filibuster to block a judge who has majority support is unprecedented in American history.  It's never happened before.  It shouldn't happen this time.  He ought to deserve and he ought to get an up or down vote.

MEHLMAN:  I would respectfully disagree with their statement on that.  I think this is an issue in which there's some disagreement.  The fact is if you look at the exit polls about 23 percent of gays and lesbians voted for this president, so lot of folks disagreed with what the Log Cabin Republicans said.
MEHLMAN:  I would respectfully disagree with that finding.  I think that there was clearly planning that occurred, planning that occurred to deal with the results of the war.  If you remember after the first Gulf War, whether it was the breaching of the dams that we saw all over Iraq, that didn't happen.
MEHLMAN:  I do.  I think that senator--first of all, whoever the Democrats nominate in the future I think will be a formidable candidate.  I said this before John Kerry was nominated.  We live in a closely divided country and the Democrat nominee walks into the election with a significant level of support.
