dOc DVD Review: The Demon (Kichiku) (1978)
Ogata's Sokichi is mercilessly harangued by Iwashita's Oume, and when the added stress of simply caring for three children becomes too much, the pair develop a horrible plan to permanently rid themselves of their perceived new burden.
As the title character, Ogata is not simply an entirely evil man, but instead an emotionally torn whipped dog to Iwashita's icy harridan, but their actions together are still brutally cold and horrific.
Ogata, however, delivers an intensely agitated performance as the confused Sokichi, and Nomura builds to an appropriate payoff that is grounded enough to know that in a story like this, there can never really be a happy ending.

 Zero Focus and The Demon
It's a cruel twist of fate that the generation of Japanese filmmakers who survived World War II are dying off just as they are finally beginning to step out of the shadows of the titans of Japanese cinema.
Ken Ogata is superb in the lead role (I guess he's the demon of the title, but a more pathetic demon you will not find); his performance here reminds me a lot of the serial killer he played in Vengeance is Mine.
The two major set pieces in the movie consist of Ogata taking his daughter (the middle child) to the top of the Tokyo tower, and abandoning her there, and taking his son (the oldest) to the north of Japan with the intention of throwing him off a cliff into the sea.

Midnight Eye review: The Catch (1983)
After the first of three title cards in the film ('The First Summer'), we're introduced to Fusajiro (Ken Ogata), a veteran fisherman, and his dutiful young daughter Tokiko (Masako Natsume).
One of Japanese cinema's best actors (and probably most famous for his roles in Vengeance is Mine, and Mishima), Ogata strikes a very masculine figure in his maguro-red sweater and bandana (a visual nod to The Deer Hunter?).
Ogata subscribes to the theory of 'method acting' (or if the theory exists in Japan), but when the camera sits static during his struggles at sea, there's no doubt that he's actually doing it.

Meanwhile, steel mill owner Toyama (Ken Ogata) is in debt to the same group of thugs.
The cast of the film is quite good—particularly the women and Ken Ogata.
Ogata is essentially wasted in the film—his character's motivations are noble, but he's never really fleshed out.

Vengeance Is Mine (Masters Of Cinema) - Films on DVD and Video - MovieMail UK
With the film unfolding through multiple flashbacks, Ogata delivers a career-defining performance as a day-labourer and smalltime con-artist who, after killing two of his co-workers, embarks on a psychopathic spree of rape and murder.
This realism exposes a familiar banality within Iwao's despicable actions and scenes of him purchasing the cheapest in a selection of knives for his next kill or a closet door that refuses to stay shut are darkly humorous.
As Iwao, Ken Ogata's committed performance is both credible and disturbingly seductive.

In recording both Ogata and Scneider an equal effort was made to keep the narrative flat and matter-of-fact.
And Ogata did not need an English speaking narrator to represent this split, complex and enigmatic personality who is Yukio Mishima.
Paul's comment seems to indicate that Lucasfilm re-recorded the narration for this DVD so that it included Ken Ogata's version in Japanese (a good thing as the film was not properly released in Japan first time round because of the Mishima estate's opposition and presumably the difficult political subject matter).

 Shogun's Shadow (1989)
Rescued by a band of ronin led by Gyobu Igo (Ken Ogata), the adolescent Takechiyo comes under their protection as they begin a perilous journey to reach Edo before a samurai warlord named Shozaemon Iba (Sonny Chiba) and his inexhaustible military forces capture and kill the boy.
Over-the-top scenes like this are luckily tempered by the developing relationship between the young boy and his protector as played by Ken Ogata.
Unfortunately, the movie closes with one of these theatrical scenes and diminishes the impact of Ken Ogata's excellent contribution.

Mishima is perhaps most famous for his own suicide in 1970 at age 45; he killed himself ritualistically with a member of his private right-wing army.
