Kenema has been the main focus of our continuing work with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, and in 2002 Merlin began both healthcare and watsan programmes in Tonkolili, Kono and Bo.
In Kenema Merlin supports the maternity, paediatric and Lassa fever wards in Kenema General Hospital and 22 primary health centres in Kenema district.
Merlin's strategy for the provision of healthcare in Kenema district is determined by the need, on the one hand, to increase health care uptake for the poorest, and on the other to increase the quality and sustainability of health care in Sierra Leone.

Background Kenema District is one of the three districts in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone, the other two being Kono and Kailhaun.

The people of Kenema view the intervention of LAWCLA as very timely and significant in a bid to balance the scale of justice for the poor.

From where I was in Kenema, we knew the upheaval was coming because of the rebellious attitudes of soldiers and their treatment of civilians.
I was an associate editor of the fiery Democrat, and from my base in Kenema, 150 miles east of Freetown, I wrote a number of articles, warning, advising, urging and many times blaming the government for its careless approach to an issue that could plunge our nation into anarchy.
The soldiers did not confront the Kamajors, who they were scared of because of their legendary mystical powers, but raided houses and engaged in massive looting, brutalising anyone perceived as one of their supporters.

Although there has been some fighting in the Kenema area, plans for two new IDP camps in Kenema are still going ahead, although slowly due to lack of resources.
In Kenema, ACF foresees problems with water supply in the Lebanese School and Fonikor IDP camps if the government goes through with its plan to increase the total population of these camps to 30,000 people.
Kenema will run out of food for IDP distribution by the end of May. There is still some food aid in Bo, and aircraft can fly there.

The UN mission in Sierra Leone has withdrawn from the strategic diamond district of Kenema and has plans to be out of the capital Freetown in October, officials said Thursday.
Local police in the eastern town of Kenema, which was a hotspot for the fighting that raged from 1991-2001 in the tiny country, officially assumed control over the diamond-mining district on Wednesday.
Kenema is the latest strategic area to be reverted to local control, following the eastern Kono district last week and the northern area of Makeni and southern Bo district in the past several months.

Located in Kenema, the Administrative Headquarter town of the Eastern Region of Sierra Leone, the Eastern Polytechnic was established as a result of a merger of two prominent government institutions - the Bunumbu Teachers College and the Government Technical Institute.
Eastern Polytechnic was designed as a multi-campus institution with a campus at Bunumbu in the Kailahun District, another at Woama in the Kono District and the third in Kenema town for Kenema District.
We call on the donor community to support this venture because the establishment of this institution and the training of youths therein is seen as a way of averting further strife in Sierra Leone.

With the diamond mines of Tongo to the north attracting migrant workers from across Africa, and waves of rebels and refugees crossing and re-crossing the eastern border with Liberia, stability has eluded Kenema for much of the last decade.
Conteh was instrumental in 1996 in assisting Merlin, the London-based medical-relief organisation, to establish a programme in Sierra Leone, which included support for the Lassa isolation ward and Lassa fever control programme in the region.

On Friday a convoy of vehicles and 12 armoured personnel carriers left Kenema with heavily-armed Zambian UNAMSIL peacekeepers heading for Tongo, 27 kilometres (17 miles) away.
