Anime News Network - Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Creator/Artist Kenichi Sonoda's eye for rendering fast cars and sleek firearms with remarkable detail remains as sharp as ever, but "Misty's Run" is an underwhelming finale to an excellent and long-running manga.
Particularly in the early "Cats" books Sonoda's background in animation was very apparent; the characters were often posed in a way that emphasized their movement, lending them a greater sense of life, and the panels were arranged in a cinematic style not unlike animation storyboards.
Sonoda continues to draw all the vehicles and firearms with an amazing accuracy, though the climatic car chase fails to capture the incredible sense of motion he achieved in "The Return of Gray".

Sonoda is also credited with the character designs in Bubblegum Crash for the same reason, i.e., old character designs of his were recycled.
Also, Sonoda was second choice for this job; he was tapped only after Artmic's first choice, Amano Yoshitaka (known for his character designs on such features as Gatchaman, Mospeada, Vampire Hunter D and Tenshi no Tamago), turned it down because he didn't want to do mechanical designs.
Sonoda also did the cover art for the videocassette and LD editions of all eight episodes of Crisis, all the Crisis CDs, and both Hurricane Live videos, which may explain his involvement in the character design process of later episodes.

Mangamaniacs Review: Gunsmith Cats by Kenichi Sonoda   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
It's an interesting Chicago that exists in the mind of Kenichi Sonoda: a town of powerful drug cartels and ruthless gun-runners, thugs and stoolies and junkies and mobsters.
Rally is definitely not to be messed with, especially when she's got a firearm or two in her hands, but she's still girly enough to say "Eeek!" when someone gets the drop on her.
Of course, everybody's got a different firearm (all of them very authentically rendered by Sonoda, a gun freak from a country where firearms are illegal) and everybody drives the most hellaciously souped-up roadsters this side of a 1950’s greaser film (equally authentically depicted, as Sonoda is also a sportscar enthusiast).

All the manga really has going for it are cool characters and lots of action (not that that's a bad thing, mind you).
This is one area where I think the anime actually exceeds the manga.
While Sonoda is capable of rendering some wonderful action scenes in fl and white, it just doesn't compare to watching the action racing along in full color complete with mucho sound effects.
