During Bible History, the Kenites were a nomadic tribe, possibly of metal workers (in Aramaic, Kenite is related to the word for smith - a tinsmith worked with tin, an arrowsmith made arrowheads etc.) that inhabited the area south of the land of Israel and into Sinai.
Moses' father-in-law Jethro, also known as Raguel, is referred to both as a Midianite and a Kenite, perhaps either due to the often melding of the identity of a people by their nation and their location, or that one was a sub-group of the other.
The Lord mentions the Kenites to Abraham as among the tribes that inhabited the land of Israel prior to the time that the Israelites were given to possess it (see also "Land On Which You Had Not Labored"):

The Kenites originally were bad folk but they have been so mixed throughout the millenniums that they are mixed with the pureblood of some of the children of God after Tubalcain and his brother.
KENITE, by definition, is literally, "Sons of Cain." From (Strong's #7014) "Qayin." Rechab was a Kenite and his son Jonadab was their acknowledged leader.
Therefore, the Kenites were well situated to dwell among the Israelites; and since they had previously 'shown kindness' to the Israelites; they were (therefore) spared a worse fate than their hosts.

This will be discussed in regards to the Kenite hypothesis that G.H. Parke-Taylor describes and examines.10 The Kenite hypothesis simply stated says that Yahweh was the tribal God of the Kenites before the Israelites and that Moses developed his attachment to Yahweh through Jethro, his father-in-law.
The success of Moses in getting the tribes to follow Yahweh was due to not only the oppression which they were faced with, but also their disappointment with tribal gods that had not worked as well as they would have liked.
The Kenite hypothesis does not in anyway explain the origins of the worship of Yahweh but it does provide us with a likely precursor to the worship by the Israelites.
