  Science Fair Projects - Dunun
A Dunun (also known as dundun, doundoun, and djun-djun) is the generic name for an African bass drum played with sticks.
The kenkeni usually holds the rhythm together with a simple pattern, the sangban typically has a more complex part, and the doundounba often serves to add depth with deep, widely spaced notes.
These are typically made of a wood shell (although metal and fiberglass shells exist) and cowhide heads (although, some have goat-skin heads).

African Drum Rhythms - The Djembe Font
The graphic symbols used in this notation system are based on the three basic sounds of the djembe - the high pitch slap, the medium pitch tone and the low pitch bass.
The same three symbols are also used for the sounds of the African bass drums - the small kenkeni, the medium size sangban and the large doundoun - and it can also be used for bells of different pitch.
In order to distinguish between djembe, bass and bell notation you can either write which it is or simply put the corresponding instrument symbol at the beginning of each notation line.

Kenkeni, djun-djun and percussion from Guinea, Africa
Our kenkeni are made in Guinea and The Gambia, West Africa, by an African Master Drummer, Libon Traore.
You can be reassured that these drums are sold on a 'Fair Trade' basis and that the craftsmen and musicians who manufacture them are receiving a fair and decent income.
The kenkeni that we manufacture should not be compared with the plethora of poor-quality west african drums that seem to have flooded the market; our drums are made by professional drummers and craftsmen who take a great pride in the work that they produce (each of our drums takes about 6 days to complete).
