Western Ferries began operating a shorter sea crossing from Kennacraig in West Loch Tarbert to Port Askaig in the Sound of Islay.
She used her bow visor and ramp at Kennacraig's linkspan and loaded via her stern ramp at the two island terminals.
For the last couple of years CalMac have operated a two ship service from Kennacraig, giving twice the number of sailings and also allowing the Island to be served as normal on summer Wednesdays when the main ferry ventures north to Oban via Colonsay.

The journey time between Kennacraig and Port Ellen is two hours and fifteen minutes; the journey time between Kennacraig and Port Askaig is two hours.
Vehicles must be at Kennacraig and Port Ellen 30 minutes before sailing and at Port Askaig 45 minutes before sailing.

Hop on a Caledonian MacBrayne ferry at Kennacraig and 2 hours later you will arrive at either Port Ellen (at the southern tip of the island) or Port Askaig (on the eastern coast).

 Advice on Getting to Colonsay
In the shoulder season there is also a Wednesday sailing from Kennacraig on the Kintyre peninsula, which calls at Islay/Jura and then Colonsay, where it turns round and retraces it route.
The Wednesday ferry originates at Kennacraig, makes its way north via Islay and Colonsay to Oban, then pauses for 90 minutes before re-tracing the route.
If you are coming a long way and are having trouble finding the ideal connection through to Oban or Kennacraig, you might consider a taxi or even a self-drive car.

The ferries to Islay (www.calmac.co.uk) go from Kennacraig which is on Citylink's bus route from Glasgow to Campbeltown (www.citylink.co.uk); the bus goes via Arrochar and Tarbet (a station on the Glasgow - Fort William railway line) and 'Rest and Be Thankful' (a mountain pass which is also on the Oban-Glasgow bus route).
Islay is a mountainous island and has the advantage that there are fewer tourists (and probably few people who even know how to pronounce the name).
The bus journey from Glasgow to Kennacraig will take you past Loch Lomond and over the 'Rest and be Thankful' pass, and will be worth doing for the scenery.

As the ferry to Islay was leaving at 7:15 the next morning I needed a hotel as close as possible to the ferry terminal at Kennacraig.
