The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced the recipients of its annual honors for outstanding American performers today, and for the first time since the awards were established 22 years ago, most of the recipients are foreign-born.
The winners are to be honored on Dec. 3 at the Kennedy Center Opera House in a gala performance that is the center's principal fund-raising event of the year.
Though the Kennedy Center has been questioned for giving people a legendary status when their careers were brief or obscure, or saluting artists with highbrow appeal but little in the way of broad popular impact, this year's honorees have had long, influential careers.

Longtime "chum" Carol Burnett – who is long overdue a Kennedy Center medal of her own – set the tone with some warm recollections of their 40 year relationship.
