The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (or Kennedy Center) opened in 1971 as a living memorial to John F. Kennedy.
The center, designed by architect Edward Durrell Stone, is located on the Potomac River and is adjacent to the Watergate Hotel.
The Center has three main theaters: A Concert Hall on the south side, an Opera House in the middle, and the Eisenhower Theater on the north side, named for Dwight Eisenhower.

The idea for this building was presented by President Eisenhower because after President Kennedy's death, which was a tragedy in 1963, age 46, it became a dedicated memorial to Kennedy.
Also in the center of the grand foyer is a 7-foot high bronze statue of John F. Kennedy.
We designed this building ourselves at art out of many materials such as blue construction paper to represent the Potomac river, cardboard for the base and roof, glue, and wood for the building, and white paint to paint the building.

In 1993 and 1994, in order to fulfill a mission to enhance the arts education of America's young people, the Education Department of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts offered two series of ballet master classes for students from metropolitan Washington and Baltimore with the legendary Suzanne Farrell.
Farrell's place in the ballet world and the quality of her teaching, the Kennedy Center enlarged the program to a national level in 1995.
The week included performances of Mozartiana, Serenade, Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, and "Tempo di Valse" from George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, in an all-Tchaikovsky program as part of the 2003 Kennedy Center Tchaikovsky Festival, plus The Balanchine Couple, a program of duets exploring the pas de deux as the heart of Balanchine's ballets.
