 Kenneth Branagh - A Midwinter's Tale
Kenneth Branagh was a celebrated actor when, in 1988, he took the international film community by surprise with his debut as a film director.
Not surprisingly, Branagh was immediately invited to Hollywood to direct his next film, "Dead Again," in which he co-starred with Emma Thompson and which he pulled off the feat of playing dual starring roles as a gumshoe detective in 1990s Los Angeles and as a European composer in the 1940s.
Branagh's most recent appearances on stage were in the Renaissance production of "Coriolanus" at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 1992 and as Hamlet in a sell-out production for the RSC in London and Stratford in 1992/3 that broke boxoffice records.

Three minutes into interviewing Kenneth Branagh about his musical adaptation of Shakespeare's "Love's Labour's Lost," his recent cartoon co-star Kevin Kline burst into the director's Ritz Carlton hotel room for a quick round of back-patting hugs and gentle ribbing.
Dressed in fl jeans, a fl Armani pull-over and brown-checked blazer, Branagh's sandy hair is gelled into a spiky, youthful, decidedly anti-establishment style that seems like an extension of his revolution-from-within approach to modern Shakespeare.
Branagh didn't chose his players for their song-and-dance ability, however.

This is the first filmed version of 'Hamlet' to use the full text of Shakespeare's play, but Branagh didn't do it just because "it was there." His intention, I believe, was to make the play accessible and understandable to the general viewer without dumbing it down, so to speak.

Branagh has always been one of the most interesting actor/writer/directors, if not always the best, since he made his big splash with 'Henry V.' One quibble I had with him was what I saw as a tendency to ham it up at times.

Branagh's ambitious Hamlet is also one of the most accessible and entertaining, yet without the faintest hint of any dumbing down or abbreviation.
Branagh himself is a wonderful Hamlet, perhaps a bit of a ham at times (as I think was Shakespeare's intent), a prince who is the friend of itinerant players.
Branagh, more than any other Hamlet, makes us understand the distracted, anguished and tortured prince, and guides us to not only an appreciation of his actions, wild and crazy as they sometimes are, but to an identification and an understanding of why (the eternal query) Hamlet is so long in assuming the name of action.

It was Kenneth Branagh, a famously nice man, a thoroughly decent actor, a gifted director of plays and films, an energetic producer, but not yet quite the blend of Galileo and John Cleese that nearly two hours of adulation seemed to suggest.
