 Clan MacKenzie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Clan MacKenzie fought on the side of the Bruce at the Battle of Inverurie in 1308 against the forces of the Clan Comyn who were rivals to the thrown.
With the Mackenzie clan the Munros were often at feud, and Andrew Munro of Milntown defended and held, for three years, the Castle Chanonry of Ross, which he had received from the Regent Moray who died in 1569, against the Clan MacKenzie, at the expense of many lives on both sides.
The Clan MacKenzie led by their Chief Kenneth who for a time held the title Earl of Seaforth but later died in exile are believed to have supported King James at the siege of Londonderry and at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

Kenneth, the eldest son, twelfth chief of the Mackenzies, soon after succeeding his father, was engaged in supporting the claims of Torquil Macleod, surnamed Connanach, the disinherited son of Macleod of Lewis, whose mother was the sister of John Mackenzie of Kintail, and whose daughter had married Roderick Mackenzie, Kenneth's brother.
Colonel Mackenzie's father was Alexander Mackenzie of Ardlock, and his mother the daughter of Robert Sutherland, Esq of Langwell Caithness, twelfth in descent from William de Sutherland, fifth Earl of Sutherland, and the Princess Margaret Bruce, sister and heiress of David II.
While Mackenzie was in France, Glengarry’s son, Angus MacDonald and his cousins, committed several outrages, slaying and burning Mackenzie clansmen, and, on the Mackenzies retaliating, had the chief summoned at the Pier of Leith to appear before the Council on pain of forfeiture.

In 1786 the Regiment was renumbered as the 71st Highlanders and wore the MacKenzie tartan kilt.

The Mackenzie territory was probably much of mid-Ross and around Muir of Ord, but in the 12th century they were removed to Wester Ross (Kintail) by William the Lion.
  During the 14th century, Eilean Donan was the subject of a dispute between the MacKenzies and the Earldom of Ross.
In 1539 Donald sailed to Applecross to lay waste in the Mackenzie lands there before heading south to lay siege to Eilean Donan castle rumoured to be only lightly garrisoned.

The information is derived from the following manuscript, and assumes that Kenneth's father was Simon, which was in error.
