Pickthorn sat for the University of Cambridge and continued to undertake his duties as a lecturer.
Pickthorn had to choose between Cambridge and the House of Commons: he chose to continue as an MP, for another constituency, and resigned his Cambridge post.
It was to that lectureship that Elton was appointed in 1949: and he remained in Cambridge, promoted to professor in 1967 and Regius Professor in 1983, till he retired in 1988.

Mr Pickthorn is one of the more intelligent of the younger Tory M.P.s (‘younger’ in political circles means under sixty), and in this pamphlet he is trying to present Toryism in a homely and democratic light while casting misleading little smacks at the Left.
