Kenny Cunningham (born June 28, 1971 in Dublin, Republic of Ireland) is an Irish footballer currently looking for a new club after his contract expired with relegated Birmingham City in May 2006, where he was highly respected by the fans and coaching staff for being a very competent defender and club captain.

In 2002, the best season for Cunningham, he moved to Birmingham City F.C., and two months later was named the skipper for the Republic of Ireland.

As Brian Kerr’s men continue their preparations ahead of tomorrow’s glamour friendly with World Champions Brazil, the captain is looking to lock the disappointment of the Euro 2004 campaign in the past and start afresh into the new series of games.
Cunningham sees Brazil as the ideal platform to launch preparations for the Cyprus game in September and with two more high-profile friendlies to follow - Czech Republic and Romania - he says the games will be a useful yard stick in gauging how far the squad has come on from the defeat in Basel.
While Cunningham is assured of a starting role, fellow central defender Andy O’Brien is not, but, owing to Gary Breen’s absence, the Newcastle clubman can expect to figure at some stage and with just eight caps to show from his two-and-a-half year international stint, he is eager to make an impression.
