A bit misplaced (most jazz players of his generation were much more interested in bop and hard bop), Wilber (along with Kenny Davern, Ralph Sutton, and Dick Wellstood) was one of the few in his age group to stick to pre-bop music.
At Dick Gibson's annual Colorado Jazz Party in 1972, Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern so enjoyed playing together during one song that within a short time Soprano Summit was formed.
Wilber and Davern both doubled on sopranos and clarinets, and were originally joined by pianist Dick Hyman, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, bassist George Duvivier, and drummer Bobby Rosengard… Read More »

When Kenny Davern was growing up, there were two kinds of jazz.
At the risk of angering Davern, who doesn't suffer jazz fools, he plays traditional prebop with a passion and improvisational inventiveness seldom associated with the music today.
But he has just released "The Kenny Davern Quartet at the Mill Hill Playhouse," a hypnotizing piece of clarinet and guitar work from Davern and James Chirillo, and "one of the greatest things I've ever done," he added.
