At the turn of the century, Kennywood was engaged in a fierce battle for survival with about a dozen other trolley parks and amusement resorts in Western Pennsylvania.
Kennywood prospered in the second half of the 1930's as new rides including Noah's Ark (1936) were added.
In 1903, a park brochure described the coaster: "This is a whirlwind of fun with its long ascents and steep descents, which offer one of the most spirited forms of enjoyment.

Kennywood is a traditional amusement park with a rich history dating back more than a hundred years.
In the early 90's the park opened a ride that many would not have expected to find at a traditional amusement park, the Steel Phantom, a modern steel roller coaster so large that it would remain one of the tallest and fastest steel coasters of its kind for its existence.
Kennywood Park decided in the late 80's and early 90s that they needed something big and fast in their park, so they contacted Arrow Dynamics the leading steel coaster designer at the time.

Park officials said the Paratrooper should be ready to go "within days," but repairs to The Whip will take longer because parts are hard to find for the ride, which is one of the oldest at Kennywood.
Kennywood CEO Harry W. Henniger said The Whip most likely would be outfitted with a new pavilion to replace the one destroyed by the storm, so that the ride fits in with the turn-of-the-century amusement park motif of Lost Kennywood, the section where the ride is located.
Kennywood spokeswoman Mary Lou Rosemeyer said the cost of storm damages at the park are not yet available.

 Kennywood Park witnesses describe chaos at Whip ride
Kennywood officials said they knew of no other fatalities, but hours after the pavilion collapsed, rescue workers were still searching through it to make sure no one else was trapped.
Kennywood employees who would not give their names said the Whip is known as a "Code Red" area, where people can be directed for shelter in case of a storm.
The ride was moved to the Lost Kennywood section of the park in 1995, the year a sheltering pavilion was built around it.

Kennywood still uses the same basic layout with the Lagoon in the middle and the walkways that lead around the park.
The Olde Kennywood Railroad, which has had many different names and themes over the years was first known as the "Gimbals' Flyer." These streamlined Art Deco engines were first used in the New York World's Fair 1938-39 "the Century of Progress." Kennywood purchased and brought the train to Pittsburgh at the conclusion if W.W.II.
It's a celebration of the era during which the beautiful amusement park was born at the end of a trolley line.

Kennywood Park is a great old traditional amusement park with wonderful old and new rides, good scenery, lines, and is The Only Park Where 100% of the coasters Receive a 5 rating!!
Kennywood realized all that Arrow is good for is building smaller coasters (that aren’t rough), and they needed a new coaster, so good old Morgan was called in to redesign and rebuild the once-famous Steel Phantom.
Kennywood Park is one of the best parks in the country, and has one of the best collections of rides in the USA.

By 1924, the park established a "Kiddieland" filled with rides fit for the littlest leisure-lovers –but more and more amusements were being added regularly to thrill the adults in the Kennywood crowd, too.
Perhaps the best-known of the park's attractions is the roller coaster known as the "Thunderbolt." Its precursor was a 1924 coaster called "The Pippin," which was designed in 1924 by John Miller.

Kennywood called it the "Kennywood 500", but for the PCTC members and fellow racing enthusiasts, it was a great way to spend quality time with the family and, at the same time, promote local racing in a very positive environment.
Local racetracks were also represented and their pace trucks and cars were a special addition to the pace laps around the park when the drivers were instructed to "start your engines".
The Park personnel were quick to provide for our every need and Kennywood has already committed to another Motorsports Day next May. The discounted "ride all day" and general admission tickets made it a more affordable family day and we thank Kennywood Park for their hospitality.

Most people agree that the biggest food thrill in the park is the Potato Patch, where the lines for french fries never quit.
Among the chills at Kennywood are Dip-n-Dots, a futurama ice cream whose serving temperature is minus-40 degrees.
The staff who twist and bag the sugar strands begin to look aged and gray by the end of their shifts when hair, eyelashes and brows are covered and matted with fine strands of woolly sugar.

The park has been acquiring land in West Mifflin and officials say they plan to spend another $2.6 million to buy an old shopping mall near the parking lot and an old railroad service shop in Duquesne -- to nearly double the size of the popular amusement park.
Laying out the park's plans, though, Kennywood Entertainment President Peter McAneny admits that much of the expansion depends on the continued development of the $2.5 billion toll road.

The Ingersoll Brothers built a second coaster at Kennywood, the John Miller designed "Racer." It was built in 1910 for $50,000, and was the world's largest racing coaster at the time.
In 1920, just after establishing their partnership, John Miller and Harry Baker were hired to design a coaster for the park.

There was so much concern expressed to the park that they decided to release the information about the changes in August rather than wait until January 2001.
Ultra smooth and extremely fast; so fast that the park is in the process of installing a series of magnetic trim brakes to stop the train from overshooting into the station.
If there were a delay in dispatching the train in the station, the train on the track would potentially ram it from behind due to the brake being unable to stop it outside of the station.

A storm had just come through the park about a week before our visit...it tore the roofs off of several rides, and totally demolished this ride...this is what remains of the Paratrooper...
The newest (and only steel) roller coaster at the park is the Phantom's Revenge...This ride was originally built as the Steel Phantom, but needed some remodeling and new cars...the result is what you see.

Phantom (green track) and the T-bolt (white track) are at the northwest end of the park.
At the other end of the park, the brownish-red track is the Racer, one of only a handful of “Moebius” racing coasters in the world.
