NRDC: Under Attack - The Endangered Kensico Watershed
Although Kensico was formed by the damming of the Bronx River in 1915, the reservoir receives most of its water from two huge aqueducts that transport water from the city's six West-of-Hudson reservoirs in the Catskill and Delaware system watersheds.
Emblematic of the development pressures now intensifying in portions of the Kensico watershed is the proposed roadway expansion of Routes 22 and 120 on the eastern side of the watershed, in the immediate vicinity of the Rye Lake portion of the Kensico Reservoir.
Indeed, average phosphorus levels in the Kensico Reservoir already exceed the phosphorus standard that was recommended for the reservoir by DEP scientists in 1993.

Impervious surface area in the reservoir’s subbasins ranges from 4 percent in the Whippoorwill basin to 45 percent in the Malcolm Brook basin (adjacent to the Catskill Upper Effluent Chamber) and averages 19 percent.
In-reservoir containment booms are being installed to prevent any hazardous discharges of material from the 23 I-684 stormwater outfalls that discharge directly into the reservoir from migrating through it and affecting water quality.
The model was used to predict stormwater pollutant loads delivered to the reservoir by a drainage basin’s tributary under existing conditions and future build-out conditions in the year 2010 with and without the stormwater management facilities.

 NYPIRG's Watershed Protection Campaign
The Kensico Reservoir watershed in Westchester County, considered to be the most critical reservoir in the system since it serves as the impoundment, the last stop before distribution, for our drinking water, is already threatened by encroaching development and requires our constant vigilance to ensure it¹s protection.
However, since the airport lies in such close proximity to the reservoir, it is imperative that we take all measures to limit activity at the airport that would be detrimental to the Kensico.
That's why NYPIRG is strongly urging Westchester County to protect the Kensico by abandoning all plans to increase activity and expand the Westchester County Airport.

KENSICO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Kensico was named in 1849 for a Siwanoy Indian chief, Cokenseko, who had sold most of the land surrounding White Plains to English settlers in the 1600s.
The village of Kensico was surrounded by hills that came to a natural v-shape and there was a nearby stone quarry on Silver Lake in North Castle, making the town a logical site for the new dam.
In the late 1800s there was a need for a reservoir that would contain waters from the various reservoirs and act as a holding tank that could easily provide needed water to nearby New York City.

Under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, the Kensico Reservoir is considered the "source water" of the Catskill and Delaware systems and is subject to strict water quality standards.
Examples of expansion are the widening of Route120/22, the Kensico Highway, which runs along the Kensico Reservoir, and of Route 22 in the Town of Southeast, Putnam County, which borders the Bog Brook and East Branch Reservoirs.

Water from those reservoirs is delivered via the Catskill and Delaware aqueducts, which cross beneath the Hudson, to a common destination at Kensico Reservoir, 15 miles north of New York City.
Kensico Reservoir, with a capacity of 30 billion gallons, was placed in service in 1915 with the damming of the Bronx River.
Although most water in Kensico Reservoir is delivered by the two trans-Hudson aqueducts, it also receives runoff from its immediate drainage area of 13.1 square miles.

NRDC: Under Attack - The West Branch Watershed
The West Branch Reservoir is located in Putnam County, in the towns of Carmel and Kent, approximately 35 miles north of New York City.
The overall health of the reservoir, as measured by its trophic state index, indicates that at least parts of the West Branch have been in an unhealthy eutrophic state for much of the last decade.
Even more troubling, DEP data suggest that the primary reason the entire West Branch Reservoir is not exhibiting the eutrophication problems common to the city's other East-of-Hudson reservoirs is that the West Branch Reservoir's watershed flow is being diluted by water entering the reservoir from the Delaware system.

This is being achieved by the addition of sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), to raise the natural pH of the source water, along with the addition of phosphoric acid (as orthophosphate) to coat the interior surface of the pipe walls, thereby shielding them from the natural corrosive action of our source water.
This increase in detection frequency, from previous years, may be due to the use of a more sensitive method (implemented by the NYC DEP Pathogen Laboratory in October 2001 for the routine analysis of Cryptosporidium oocysts); not necessarily a change in water quality.
