The Electoral Boundaries and Representation Act requires the Electoral Boundary and Representation Commission to establish the electoral quotient for the province by dividing the total population by the total number of electoral districts.

As the division of a territory into districts is usually intimately connected with the apportionment of representation to its population, the words "districting" and "re-districting" have come to be used in American politics as nearly synonymous with apportionment.
At the passage of the electoral law defining the apportionment of the chamber of deputies, the national assembly also distributed among the departments in nearly equal shares, not dependent on population, the senators to be chosen by each.
The census of 1797 was assumed as a basis of the apportionment made by the constitution, but it is difficult to reconcile its allotment of representation with the returns of population; Valencia and Granada, with a nearly equal population, having respectively 19 and 2 deputies.

If a member practises in more than one electoral district, is registered in more than one specialty, or is registered with the College as a faculty member, the member must choose one electoral district and specialty in which to vote, or whether to vote as a faculty member.

Such aggressive colonisation was in fact evident from the Centre's decision to redraw the district boundaries and to create new electoral constituencies to benefit the Sinhalese parties.[33] Importantly, the colonisation issue provided a greater impetus to the birth of the Eelam movement.
A tragedy of the competitive electoral politics of the island is that the mainstream Sinhalese parties - the UNP and the SLFP - have evolved parochial and chauvinistic approaches to national issues like the ethic conflict.
Second, provisions were made in the constitution to create a separate electorate for a community which was substantially concentrated in an area where the majority of the inhabitants belonged to a different racial or religious groups.

Canada's single-member district-plurality electoral system strongly rewards small parties (like Reform and the Bloc Québécois) that concentrate their votes in a single region, while punishing parties that spread their votes broadly across the country, as the Conservatives did in 1993.
At the provincial level, corruption and senescence caused the British Columbia Social Credit Party to collapse, leaving a void on the right into which Reform could have moved.
By refusing to enter provincial politics, Reform squandered an incredible opportunity to build a serious power base, create a sense of political momentum and allow its partisans to have undivided party loyalties at the federal and provincial levels.

Decades ago carpenters were part of the working poor, but after building a union that dramatically increased their wages and benefits, many have forgotten their roots and think of themselves as middle class beneficiaries of a capitalist society.
Much of the social politics of UBC members is carried into the electoral politics of the official union bodies.
Yet in New York City and indeed most of the country, union democracy of the kind supported by the New England carpenters does not seem to be in very high demand.

This is because of the spectre of constitutionally hyperactive judges in the future pronouncing all of our emerging rights laws and according to their own values; judicial appetites, too, grow with the eating.
Equally undesirable is the prospect of Canada's legislators, painfully aware of later electoral rejection for backing the wrong political horses, further acquiescing in the growing (and painless) expedient of shipping awkward political questions to the judiciary for decision, thus reserving to themselves the privilege of possible later disclaimer.

In older context, "prefecture" and "district" are alternative terms to refer to xiàn before the establishment of the Republic of China.
In the Republic each county is administered by an elected "county council", and the old provincial divisions are merely traditional names with no political significance.
The result was often a merger of the two into a "district" (eg Rotorua) or a change of name to "district' (eg Waimairi) or "city" (eg Manukau).
