The Battle of Britain culminated on September 15, 1940 with two massive waves of German attacks that were decisively repulsed by the RAF.

Kent, because of its soubriquet "the Garden of England", might be regarded as a picturesque rural county, but farming is still an industry.
Following the invasion of Britain by William of Normandy the people of Kent adopted the motto Invicta meaning undefeated and claiming (quite wrongly) that they had frightened the Normans away, presumably in an attempt to defame the people of Hastings in neighbouring Sussex.
As of 2006, the leader of Kent County Council is Conservative Sir Sandy Bruce-Lockhart.

The Battle of Britain, as it became known, was fought in the skies above Kent's orchards, fields and villages, and it was here that Hitler's invasion plans were first stalled, and then put off indefinitely.
Kent's towns were bombed throughout the war and casualties on the ground were often heavy in spite of the fact that thousands of people went underground to avoid the raids.

As many of you know 2000 was the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain when the RAF prevented the Luftwaffe gaining air superiority over Britain and thus preventing an invasion.
This is the Kent Battle of Britain museum and it has many artefacts from the Battle as well as uniforms and many full size replica planes used in the film Battle of Britain.
During the Battle of Britain Gravesend was a satellite airfield to Biggin Hill however many squadrons still operated from it and surprisingly it was never bombed by the Luftwaffe during the Battle.

The Battle of Britain took place over a period of a few weeks in the summer of 1940 following the surrender of France and at a time when Britain stood alone against Hitler and the Third Reich.
The aerial attacks on Britain's airfields and cities were to be the prelude to the invasion, the Nazi forces were assembled and waiting at the French ports just over 20 miles from the Kent coast.
The relentless German air attacks were aimed initially at the airfields of RAF Fighter Command but went on to cause great damage to many cities including London, Coventry and Liverpool but the RAF wreaked havoc on the Luftwaffe bombers and their fighter escorts although at great cost in loss of its own pilots and aircraft.

The Battle of Britain was fought in the skies of Britain between July and October 1940.
While the German armies consolidated their hold on Western Europe, and Britain was still recovering from the retreat of Dunkirk, thirty-three squadrons of Hurricanes and nineteen squadrons of Spitfires took on the might of the German Luftwaffe.
We have three main visits; to the Battle of Britain museum at Hawkinge, to the memorial at Capel-le-Ferne and to the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial at RAF Manston.
