Nagano has not abandoned Europe, either; his LAO job is part of a balancing act with Berlin's Deutsche Symphonie Orchester, where he has been chief conductor and artistic director since June 2000.
Nagano was tapped for the post of principal conductor by Domingo, Los Angeles Opera's multitasking artistic director, whose own commitments away from L.A. include a full calendar of singing and conducting appearances, plus the artistic directorship of Washington Opera.

Nagano's orchestra, the DSO, is a member of ROC, or Rundfunk-Orchester und Chöre GmbH, an umbrella organization founded back in 1995 in response to the post-reunification problems that threatened the continued existence of Berlin's radio orchestras and choirs.

Nagano's squabbles with Pesch were not worthy of the press attention accorded them; the injustices committed against him were largely in his own imagination.

Nagano’s loyalty to Berkeley - which some call “bizarre” for one of the world’s most sought-after maestros (he was once dubbed “classical music’s hot new conductor dude” by People magazine and “the next Leonard Bernstein” by New York) - says a lot about his view of music’s role in everyday life.
Part of Nagano’s task involves shattering stereotypes of northern California’s “pseudo-intellectuals sitting in their hot tubs in Marin County chasing down alternative lifestyles and religions” and southern Cal’s “frolicking on the beach, amid palms, fast-food and the superficiality of glamour and marketing.

The text on the Nagano recording is less provocative: the Celebrant merely says the expected “Pacem.” There are some musical changes, too: the drums now enter “Almighty Father” in measure 8, not measure 4; Nagano restores some of the cut introduced into the taped Kyrie in the original recording.
Certainly, the sense of political outrage seems just as relevant today as it did during the Vietnam War—and that sense, as we’re listening, of the connection between then and now gives Mass an added gravity, a sense that what once may have sounded trendy is deeper than that.

While there are elements of the delicate glittering orchestration of his contemporary Ravel, Canteloube's Chants seeks to bring out their full worth by surrounding them with as much of their natural poetry as possible.
Kent Nagano realises this poetry with a rich but keenly focused Orchestra de l'Opera National de Lyon, while soprano Dawn Upshaw demonstrates not just the sheer beauty of her voice, but concentrates on the lyric, whether wistful, flirtatious, romantic or simply playful.
Not as voluptuously sensual as Kiri Ti Kanawa's version with the ECO in the early-1980s, Upshaw and Nagano remain closer to the folk origins of the music and the result is utterly enchanting.
