The Kent State shootings, also known as May 4 or The Kent State Massacre, occurred at Kent State University in the city of Kent, Ohio, and involved the shooting of students by the Ohio National Guard on Monday, May 4, 1970.
The work was first performed on the Kent State campus on May 8, 1971 and was revived for the twenty fifth commemoration of the tragedy in 1995.
The Kent State killings proved a catalyst for the formation of the New Wave rock group Devo, who began as a Kent, Ohio performance art group in the mid-1970s; several members were Kent State University students at this time.

These are some of the sources that I found very helpful in researching the events leading up to the Kent State shootings, as well as a chronological account of the actual shootings and their aftermath.
This was a very helpful page with links to a number of useful websites about Kent State, such as the Time Almanac Account of Kent State, the homepages of survivors of the KSU shootings, and various other sites detailing the events of the time.

I should add that there was a subsequent civil suit against the state by the families of the victims.
I mean you can call the deaths of 4 innocent students murder but hardly a massacre, the implication of which is malice aforethought and carried out with at least some degree of planning and organisation.
The "tragedy at Kent State" would be mild compared to other tragedies around the world, but when speaking about the US, I think this event does stand out.

When I was asked to write some words about the Kent State Massacre of May 1970, my mind’s eye filled like a bucket under a dripping sink; each word a drop, not of water, but of blood.
What these blood-stained markers of history (and fairly recent, 20th century history, I might add) teach us is the ubiquity of state violence, as well as the impunity of state actors, who commit what would be called, if it happened anywhere else, crimes against humanity.
Kent State teaches that a so-called “free” society will slaughter students who are exercising their alleged constitutional right of demonstrating for peace!

A federal judge upholds the state's indictments of the students, but orders the state grand jury's report to be expunged from the record and physically destroyed due to its bias.
The "special" state grand jury is even further discredited when Ohio officials dismiss charges against 20 of the 25 individuals indicted by the grand jury.
The state of Ohio awards them a total of $675,000, to be split 13 ways, and the defendants sign a "statement of regret." Some victims claim the statement is an apology, but the defendants and their attorneys dispute that.
