At Kent State, a massive demonstration was held on May 1 on the Commons (a grassy area in the center of campus traditionally used as a gathering place for rallies), and another was planned for May 4.
Shortly after the shootings took place, the Urban Institute conducted a national study that concluded the Kent State shooting was the single factor causing the only nationwide student strike in history—over 4 million students protested and over 900 American colleges and universities closed during the student strikes.
The work was first performed on the Kent State campus on May 8, 1971 and was revived for the 25th commemoration of the tragedy in 1995.

 VIETNAM WAR, Kent State Shootings
At Kent State University, an anti-war rally was held at noon on the Commons, a large, grassy area in the middle of campus which had traditionally been the site for various types of rallies and demonstrations.
The mayor feared further disturbances in Kent based upon the events of the previous evening, but more disturbing to the mayor were threats that had been made to downtown businesses and city officials as well as rumors that radical revolutionaries were in Kent to destroy the city and the university.
The legal aftermath of the May 4 shootings ended in January of 1980 with an out-of-court settlement involving a statement signed by 28 defendants as well as a monetary settlement, and the Guardsmen and their supporters view this as a final vindication of their position.

Kent State University in Kent, Ohio was placed in an international spotlight after a tragic end to a student demonstration against the Vietnam War and the National Guard on May 4, 1970.
It was this act that led Governor James Rhodes to declare a state of emergency, and place Kent State under the control of the Ohio National Guard.
Fearing mass protests as a result of the Kent State incident, Governor James Rhodes suggested that all state universities be shut down temporarily, in order to prevent further safety and property hazards.

The Kent State incident was one that sparked my attention and through the resources of the Web, I was able to do a great deal of research about the shootings, as well as get in contact with an actual survivor of the incident via email.
These are some of the sources that I found very helpful in researching the events leading up to the Kent State shootings, as well as a chronological account of the actual shootings and their aftermath.
It also does a good job describing the effects that the shootings had on the campus of Kent State and what is being done today to remember those victims.

We don't shoot war protesters anymore, not yet anyway, but we sure don't mind demonizing the mother of a soldier killed in the line of duty in another unpopular war who has the gall to ask why.
I remember when the Kent State Massacre happened; I was in college in NY at the time, and we all walked around campus in a daze, shocked that protesting could result in death.
The presence of Canfora (the flag waver) near the front of the group in the parking lot and the fact that many of the bullets that passed him and struck people further down in the parking lot has always made me suspicious that they were aiming for him in particular because of his symbolic status.

A federal judge upholds the state's indictments of the students, but orders the state grand jury's report to be expunged from the record and physically destroyed due to its bias.
The "special" state grand jury is even further discredited when Ohio officials dismiss charges against 20 of the 25 individuals indicted by the grand jury.
The state of Ohio awards them a total of $675,000, to be split 13 ways, and the defendants sign a "statement of regret." Some victims claim the statement is an apology, but the defendants and their attorneys dispute that.
