The natural rarity of the crab plover appears to be a function of limited availability of suitable nest-sites in close proximity to an abundant supply of crabs, which dominate their diet.
Colonial nesting, an aspect in the nesting behaviour of crab plover which has a strong bearing on their conservation, is much more characteristic of seabirds, be they on cliffs or on islands, than of waders.

Plovers under pressure: Kentish Plovers in southern Portugal (Research in Portugal) - research, Portugal, plants, ...
Despite the fact that only a few coastal wetlands are left in Portugal, the number of breeding Kentish Plovers is still relatively high, with a population estimated at between 1,100 and 1,600 pairs, representing perhaps 4% of the European population.
A further factor is natural change; because Kentish Plovers prefer bare surfaces for nesting, the spread of vegetation over former areas of open dune and marsh has gradually reduced the area available for breeding.

While human infidelity may be motivated by any number of reasons, scientists say cheating by socially monogamous shore birds seems to provide greater genetic diversity when they are already paired to genetically similar partners.
Researchers from six countries looked at the so-called extra-pair mating tactics of females from three bird species: western sandpipers in Alaska, common sandpipers in southern Sweden and Kentish plovers in Turkey.
It seems some female birds actively seek copulations with other males, and some males who mate with other females allow the eggs to be laid in the male's home nest.
