Forts of Illinois..... History of Illinois Forts presented by Illinois Trails History and Genealogy
The soldiers, with Simon Kenton at their head, were secretly admitted to the fort by a Pennsylvanian who happened to be within, and the commandant, Rocheblave, was surprised in bed, while sleeping with his wife by his side.
To the south of the camp was the old university, to the west and north was prairie land, clumps of trees, and thinly scattered houses, which have all long since given way to the march of progress.
One, armed with two cannon, protected the lake (east) and south sides of the fort; the other house, with one cannon and a large stand of muskets, protected the north (river) and west sides.

 TS181 Clapham Junction - Trainspots (Ver 1.50 )
Britain's busiest railway station, during the peaks there are over 100 trains per hour using the 16 platforms, with some non stop trains too.
Railway enthusiasts can also act as eyes and ears against railway vandalism, and as such should surely be encouraged to do so by the supply of adequate information such as is found on this website.
The information on these pages is supplied for the benefit of railway enthusiasts who carry out a harmless hobby, and through the medium of photography and video, actually promote the railway industry.

 THE STORY OF THE LOCOMOTIVE
At that period the design of steam locomotives had made but little progress, and the directors of the new railway were uncertain whether to employ locomotive engines or to make use of stationary engines by the side of the track which would haul the trains by means of ropes.
It was this relationship between the progress in locomotive building and the construction of railways that was so keenly appreciated by the great George Stephenson, who devoted his time not only to the improvement of the engine itself, but also to railway construction and development.
The next step forward was the provision of railway transport for passengers, their requirements tending to speeds above that to which they were accustomed when traveling by stagecoach on the roads.

Besley, Henry. A ride on the South Devon Railway : from the Route book of Devon. (2004)
The central situation of the station, and the railway passing through Teignmouth by a deep cutting, a considerable portion of which is arched, and passed over by means of bridges, afford the greatest convenience to the inhabitants and visiters [sic], without, in the slightest degree injuring the town as a watering place.
Starcross is in the parish of Kenton, and derives its name from a cross that formerly stood near the landing place on the bank of the river.
On emerging from this tunnel, we descend, by an incline, to the northern suburbs of Plymouth.

I would add that the Basra railway was built by the British as a narrow gauge line - probably metre gauge as it was built by the Govrnment of India.
I was searching around looking for info on any railway in Iraq and found a few links to the history of the the Baghdad Railway.
The central station seemed to have quite a few platforms but no overall roof.

It was very nostalgic to be seated in the front bay of the leading TSO once again and departure was right on time as we set off for the gentle climb towards Cardiff Queen Street, where the train filled up rapidly with returning office workers from that part of the City.
It doesn't seem to have affected all the shed roads as the two nearest the main line were still open for business and at the South end of the depot all roads were in use.

 South Devon Public Transport
South Devon is well served by the railway, with the Great Western main line running through much of South Devon, including part of it along the coast.
All of the stations, except for Churston are on or close to the coast path, and the journey is very scenic, as it pases Goodrington and Broadsands, before heading in line to join the banks of the river Dart into Kingswear.
The main line is one of the most sceninc railways in the world, running along the Exe estuary from Exeter, before joining the coast for the journey between Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth.

 ART DECO BUILDINGS
Croydon Airport was a product of the age and although uninspiring coaches now leave from the Art Deco coach station it is sometimes possible to see the stylish Orient Express at the railway station.
The distinctive house style was applied to all new stations built in the 1930s including those designed by other architects.
It was a machine age style which utilised the innovations of the times such as plastics, chrome and aluminium.
