Kenya (Sanaa Lathan) has the career thing working for her (she’s even up for partner), but it’s a daily battle dealing with the subtle and not-so-subtle challenges that come from being an strong African-American woman in a white man’s corporate world.
After being told that she needs to “let go and let flow”, Kenya decides to accept a blind date, but she’s not interested when she meets Brian (Simon Baker), a super laid-back landscape designer who happens to be Caucasian.
Brian quickly agrees so he can be around her, but it takes awhile for Kenya to realize that she actually likes this guy and his lovable dog, Max.

 Movie Review - Something New
Kenya McQueen (Sanaa Lathan) is a high-strung but successful fl senior manager at her mostly white accounting firm.
Brian is a landscape architect and Kenya's backyard happens to be in need of a serious makeover, so when he eventually finds himself charged with the transformation of her yard, he seizes the opportunity to loosen her up a bit.
Kenya attempts to satisfy her conflicted feelings by proclaiming, "it's not prejudice, it’s just preference." Hamri and Turner run us through the thoughts and deliberations of most of Kenya's family and friends.

Reeling: the Movie Review Show's review of Something New
Kenya flounders to the point of rudeness, clearly unwilling to consider a man outside of her own race.
Brian tells Kenya 'I take hard earth and make things bloom,' and obviously he's determined to do the same with her, but once Kenya 'lets go with the flow' the relationship travels a rocky road within Kenya's circle of friends and family.
Kenya McQueen (Sanaa Lathan), a fast-track corporate attorney, is, in her mind, a statistic – 42.2% of all African American women will never marry and she is sure that she is one of that number.

Kenya's and Brian's emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers.
This movie deals honestly and delicately with the REAL emotions a fl woman may feel when she finds herself falling in love with a man that doesn't look like her or comes from a socioeconomic background different from hers.
Kenya is strong willed and has the typical fl woman attitude even though this movie tried to counter attack this by placing her career accomplisments within the movie.

Movie Review - Something New - eFilmCritic
Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, “Love and Basketball”) is a workaholic African-American who struggles daily with race and class pressures.
Forced to confront her own hang-ups about race, Kenya embarks on a very self-conscious relationship with Brian, struggling to stay focused on her heart and not her skin color.
But Hamri is incapable of organically maintaining the trajectory of the central relationship, and soon trots our lame reasons for Kenya and Brian to argue, only because she needs to situate the film in a position to gobble up pandering third act clichés like a Pac-Man game.
